When I discovered Kulintang music, a part of me thought I was in a position to somehow be a part of βsavingβ a dying tradition.
What I didnβt understand is that kulintang music thrived even in 2005, evidenced in the existence of kulintang music festivals held regularly across kulintang country.
It squashes then stomps on it then boosts the sub frequencies and squashes it all again
Talking non-stop about kulintang music when you can buy a ticket to the only kulintang music festival of its kind #GongstersParadise

Aga Mayo Butocan trained a generationβs worth of kulintang players coming from UP Diliman. She developed cypher notation still used by many today and does not let a student get away with bad habits especially in posture. Her playing style is lively, smooth, & melodic.

The flames of creativity and artistry carries on in kulintang country as well as the diaspora in the hands of women.
One of the most successful contemporary Kulintang acts is the 21st Century is Pantayo, all women, and no shortage of gongs.

A story told to me about the origin of kulintang music is a tale that involves a river spirit sighting.
A river spirit embodied as a woman,
playing kulintang music on river stones arranged in a graduated row.
She vanished from sight but her music was so memorable a whole tradition was birthed.
