On paper, the cities of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and Bentonville, Arkansas, are as different as two places can be. Woonsocket is a former mill town decimated by white flight, while Bentonville is vibrant, home to arts festivals and concerts.

The nonprofit Centurion Foundation has been in stalled talks to buy the hospitals for three years from their bankrupt owner, but the state has been looking for other buyers. One such buyer dropped out this week, after learning that it would be forced to take on $90M in post-bankruptcy debt.

New Hampshire and Maine are relatively conservative states in a liberal region, allowing their senators to be mediators between the parties.

However, other New England senators slammed the breakaways, most notably Vermont's Sen. Bernie Sanders, calling it, a "very, very bad vote."

Last night, eight Dem. and Ind. senators voted with Republicans to end the government.

Three of them were from northern New England, and helped broker the deal: Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Angus King (I-ME).
