It is an ideological project. Luxonโs National Party provides the platform, Seymourโs ACT supplies the libertarian zeal &Winston Petersโ NZ First adds populist muscle. Together, they are remaking New Zealand in the image of small-government orthodoxy, fast, deep and with scant regard for consensus.
The relentless assault on Treaty principles is no accident. It is a calculated, systematic campaign to strip Mฤori influence and funnel benefits to the Crown and the richest few, while eroding the foundations of partnership and justice in Aotearoa.

"This was more than a legal victory. It was a constitutional shift. The Treaty of Waitangi, long dismissed as a โnullity,โ now had real legal force. The case set the foundation for modern Treaty jurisprudence and influenced every major settlement and law that followed."
I have written about the importance of the Mฤori roll before, but hearing Sir Sidney Mead speak about it gives those words a deeper pulse, a sharper edge.

I first wrote this article in December 2025, but after the recent statements about Te Pฤti Mฤori and the fresh attacks from Hobson's Pledge, I feel compelled to share it again. "As I have said before, if any party truly represents your cause, then the cause must stand above any individual."

"Brigading isnโt an outburst of disagreement; itโs a coordinated operation. These campaigns often begin on altโtech forums or private group chats where targets, typically activists, journalists, or educators, are selected for removal."

"Although he is Mฤori himself, he has spent decades using his identity to criticise what he calls โseparatism,โ often attacking Mฤori leadership and specific Mฤori rights to gain support from a primarily conservative, older, and non-Mฤori voting demographic."

The harm was a direct political choice by a National Government that put ideology before people. Mฤori are still living with the consequences today. They are trying to do it again.
The following was written in March 1989 by Sir Sid Mead: "Mr Peters was seen by most Mฤori people as a โwhingeing turncoat,โ which seemed to add to his lustre."

"While Iwi have gained significant wealth through settlements, that wealth is at risk if the laws of the country change. Without a well-funded political voice, Mฤori interests are constantly fighting an uphill battle against better-resourced opponents."

"The next time they point a finger and whisper words like 'extremist' or 'separatist' at Te Pฤti Mฤori, look at the hands doing the pointing. Donโt forget the history written in the laws and policies they used to push our most vulnerable into the shadows."

"A stronger Mฤori roll means a stronger Mฤori voice. It means Mฤori deciding their own representation instead of having it weakened or dispersed. It is a clear path to greater influence at a time when that influence is being challenged."

Todayโs debates about the Treaty and co-governance are shaped by how history is remembered, retold, and sometimes manipulated. Kohimarama is regularly used by rightโwing groups to argue for policies that restrict Mฤori rights and weaken Treaty obligations.

This lie turns generations of disadvantage into accusation and keeps Mฤori carrying the weight of a system that failed them. Aotearoa cannot move forward while blaming victims instead of fixing the structures that created the inequality.

Te Pฤti Mฤori has argued that the system is so structurally harmful that true justice will one day require abolishing prisons altogether and replacing them with solutions that heal rather than punish. Without real reform, we will keep harming Mฤori whฤnau and the generations that follow.
These are some of the messages I receive on Facebook from the right-wing for what I write. My apologies for the language.
