For my #RandomBacklogSampler this week, I played the first hour or so of Hypnospace Outlaw, which is remarkably good at recreating (and lampooning) the Geocities-era internet. I had a website when I was in middle school. I coded it in HTML, from scratch. It was very bad, unlike this very good game.

It really does an excellent job with scratching the System Shock itch, and is substantial without overstaying its welcome!

Did you write the barks for all the baddies, too? I cracked up when I heard some of them for the first time.
Was wondering who was behind the delightfully grim humor in this game's writing, only to discover it was the wonderful @caraellison.bsky.social -- who also apparently voices the pirates in the game. I have had great fun with this game this week. Recommended.

Plucked this one out of my backlog at random and immediately was hooked. Deeply compelling gameplay loop with a procgen hook. The scroungingest game I've ever played (complimentary). The sassy, goofy, comic-book aesthetic is a delight.
My 8YO is just finishing up the “Turnabout Goodbyes” episode of the original Ace Attorney, and her jubilation at turning the tables on Von Karma is a joy to behold. Videogames are good.

I agree with this and also think the Gorillaz should be able to perform the score from RAVENOUS (1999)
FFVII Rebirth was overstuffed, bloated, and way too long — but I will absolutely sign up to spend more time with the FFVII cast, who all these years later are still one of my favorite fictional crews. (Also, c’mon, the soundtrack is going to be 975 bangers in a row.)

My #RandomBacklogSampler game for this week was Void Bastards, which immediately sucked me in and compelled me to play for several hours. Is a proc-gen riff on System Shock ever going to have the same punch as a hand-crafted one? No. Does it have a delightful, novel flavor all its own? Totally.
Oh lol Pokopia is a Switch 2 exclusive? Well I don’t know anyone who has one of those
