Yeah, I would hope in education at least. But given itβs a national priority critical thinking goes out the window π

Spotted in a Chinese bookstore. For Primary kids?! Unbelievable π± (TBF China is classic for slop publishing based on the latest trends, and I didnβt flip through it, but cβmon please no!)
π
Not a good look for NSW police π± (or Australia π’)
The moment I post ridiculous mainland news stories will be when pigs fly

Fun China experience today. In China (one child policy hangover) doctors/sonographers are forbidden to reveal the gender of an unborn child. But for 360rmb you can get a van with blacked out windows to come to your apartment and do a hush hush scan. - baby sister incoming! β€οΈ

holy crap I saw the name and had a flashback to learning how to do decorative laces for my Converses in middle (?) school from this website π΅βπ«
Might be too late now, but suggest the road via daxuzhen, and xingping. Good balance of backroad vibes, and decent road surface (requires a short ferry near xingping, which is honestly a highlight!)
Third typhoon day for the season coming up, this one looks like it might actually hit us tho !
Classic Shenzhen. Scan QR code (and give personal details) for a free incense stick from a vending machine at a hilltop temple. π
China Mobile sending out this message today. Exams really are treated differently here! #gaokao
π¬ Stay safe!
Interesting to see the state of the Great Wall 100 year ago, clearly lots of restoration in the years since!
no-one? I assume an exercise in price anchoring. Have the highest tier to make the lower tier seem more reasonable in price.
Itβs Mary Anningβs birthday, so time to share @katebeaton.bsky.socialβs brilliant cartoon again.
Maybe the first pass of appleβs AI algorithm should be to determine the voicemail messageβs language so it doesnβt produce absolute nonsense like this when the message isnβt in English π€¦ π
I tried it so you donβt have to: βspicy chicken leg chili flavored ice creamβ. Exactly as advertised. Thanks I hate it π€’
...whoops π€¦ , Maybe check in with your colleagues that know something about China when writing about the market here.... www.nytimes.com/2025/03/05/b... (can anyone think of something that happened this feb in China to lower production? π€
China newsletter by @phelimkine.bsky.social on an organization in Shenzhen advertising for scientists and technologists, apparently targeting federal employees laid off by Elon Musk:

Not an exaggeration to say this was pound-for-pound the most effective piece of US public diplomacy in China. Twitter was blocked, but U.S. embassy pollution tweets forced Beijing to start publishing its own pollution data, which fed public outrage. Result: millions breathing vastly less toxic air
Fascinating article on a mysterious 1930s cheese poster from republican era China (with a fun Australia connection too)
ηΊ―ηΊ―ηθεζη ..haha yep
Spotted out of my taxi window in Shenzhen today. Old mate selling a live turtle hanging from a stick π€¦ββοΈ (when I came back the same way 2 hours later he was goneβ¦so I guess he sold it π€·)
McDonald's China throwing down the gauntlet
What annoys the hell out of me with the coverage of many things altman says is how each article is basically a quote of his ramblings. Unchallenged, investigated just quoted
Itβs a global phenomenon. Back in my home city (in Aus)the local govt is changing building regs (to mandate larger garages) because too many people are buying cars that donβt fit in their garages and parking on the street π€¦
Iβm less positive about the awful cycling infrastructure. Especially as bikes are not technically allowed on most roads. Also as a former Beijinger I donβt see the big gulf described. Some areas of Beijing equally modern and full of robotaxis(if thatβs your measure). Fwiw tho, I prefer life in SZ
Fun (and pretty balanced) look at where I live, from @techaltar.bsky.social In recent times Iβve seen a lot of tech utopia BS on social media that makes Shenzhen look like a cyberpunk wet dream. The reality is more or less this video. Not utopia nor dystopia just a particularly modern chinese city.
