You spend enough time in @thenewschool.bsky.social archives, you end up finding these gems...
"Answers Desired on New School Program," circa 4 October 1951
Another devastating blow to US academia. If this holds, it effectively ends the hiring of non-citizens by US Universities.

@thenewschool.bsky.social students! This Fall I'm teaching a new course, "Theater Under Fascism". We'll be looking at different ways in which theater has responded to fascism in Germany, New York City, and in Latin America. There are still a few spots available!
Great chat with Fabiula Passini & Sandro Moser today! Brought them a copy of the latest issue of Theater magazine with my essay on the Festival de Curitiba

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.
This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.
It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.
I am not trying to diminish the serious problem of economic inequality between teams from former colonizing and former colonized countries, that problem is real and should be addressed. What I am saying is that, based on what we have seen in the #FIFACWC, I hope we can retire "European superiority"!
Moreover, top 🇧🇷 teams are competitive against most teams from these four European leagues, and both 🇧🇷 and 🇦🇷 are competitive against most other leagues, including 🇵🇹. This is hardly "European superiority." This is the superiority of teams from 🏴🇩🇪🇪🇸🇮🇹🇵🇹🇧🇷🇦🇷, as has been the case for the past century!
My point is not that the best football teams today play in Europe (they do). My point is that the top tier of club football today comes from three European leagues, 🏴🇩🇪🇪🇸 (four if you want to be generous and include 🇮🇹). The #FIFAWCW demonstrated that the top 🇧🇷 teams can play head-to-head with them
If INTER wins and JUV upsets Real Madrid, that still leaves us with 2 🇩🇪, 2 🏴, 2 🇮🇹, PSG 🇫🇷 and 1 🇧🇷. If FLU and Real Madrid win, that would leave us with 2 🇩🇪, 2 🏴, 1 🇪🇸, PSG 🇫🇷 and 2 🇧🇷 as the top 8 teams in the world. Not bad for a competition in which UEFA started out with 12 out of 32 seats!
For the Round of 16, 🇧🇷 was unlucky in that Palmeiras and Botafogo faced each other, and Flamengo ended up facing Bayern (top tier) due to their GS loss to Benfica. Still, barring an upset by Monterrey or Al-Hilal, if FLU beats Inter today, we can still have 2 🇧🇷, an impressive 25% vs UEFA's 6 (75%)
From what I am calling the first tier (🇧🇷🏴🇩🇪🇪🇸+PSG), all advanced, except for Atlético Madrid (in what should have been Barcelona's seat). From the second tier, 1 out of 2 🇵🇹 and 0 out of 2 🇦🇷 advanced. The two 🇮🇹 did, but with a much easier path and worse results than the top tier teams.
By the round of 16, UEFA had increased their dominance to 56% (9), but CONMEBOL had also increased to 25%, with all four 🇧🇷 teams qualified. Two teams from the host 🇺🇸 and one Saudi 🇸🇦💰 completed the list of the best 16 teams in the world. But let's take a closer look at who advanced from GS
Let's look at the #FIFACWC statistics: Out of the 32 spots, UEFA was given 12 seats (38%), while CONMEBOL had only half (6 seats or 19%). Including their special Inter Miami provision, CONCACAF had a disproportionate 5 seats (16%), CAF and AFC had 4 each (12%), and OFC got their usual pity seat.
