As we gavel into the 2026 legislative session, we do so with grief and heavy hearts. It has been the honor of a lifetime to know Melissa Hortman, to have fought alongside her to better the lives of Minnesotans, and to call her my friend.

We will hold every one of these federal agents and administration officials accountable for the lawlessness and terror they are inflicting on our communities. We will never bend to their tyranny.
Don Lemon and Georgia Fort are journalists protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. Their arrests this morning by masked federal agents— with Georgia’s arrest carried out in front of her children just before the start of the school day—is a stain on the fabric of our democracy.
I am not afraid to prosecute federal agents who break the law.
What this moment requires is a leader with the resolve, the morals, and the nerve to fight for the people of our state. No person is above the law — not a federal agent, not Donald Trump — and no one in our community is beneath its protection.
The trials of these federal agents are likely to occur after this year’s election, placing the responsibility for accountability squarely in the hands of the next Hennepin County Attorney.
I commend my Congresswoman for refusing to back down, for standing tall against the forces of hate, and for always delivering for the people of Minnesota.

Even in a moment when it would have been perfectly understandable to end her event and go home, she knew that many of her constituents are hurting right now due to the chaos federal immigration agents have wrought through our streets.
Anyone who knows Ilhan should not be surprised that she did not allow this despicable incident to derail her from her commitment to service and moving forward with her town hall event.

Text messages from me reading: Representative Frazier, my name is Dan Suitor and I live in Minneapolis (8-6). Maybe I shouldn't lead with this, but you've already earned my support in the caucuses for Hennepin County Attorney. But I want to ask, if elected, whether and how you will commit to expending every resource at your office's disposal to prosecute ICE agents for their crimes in this city I'm an attorney myself, so I understand the difficulties of prosecuting federal officers acting (putatively) in the line of duty. But at this point, I need to know what I can tell other people when then ask if my preferred candidate is going to fight for us.
Hey Dan— Thank you for reaching out, and I appreciate your support. Under my leadership, there will be accountability for any federal agent when we can prove they’ve violated state law. Many of the charging decisions and trials of federal agents will likely occur during the term of the next HCA. Cedrick Frazier is running for Hennepin County Attorney, i.e. head prosecutor covering Minneapolis. He's probably the choice of most progressive folks already, and has made public statements about prosecuting ICE agents. As a caucus-goer, I got a letter with a contact number and asked him about it:

Another sharp reminder today as a very kind @cedrickfrazier.bsky.social volunteer called about precinct caucuses - it still seems crazy to think about caucusing, but we all see why its important to get a solid Hennepin County Attorney like Frazier, *especially** in these times right???
We will continue to express our 1st Amendment rights and we will not concede our 4th Amendment protections.

By collectively gathering and preserving evidence, we can pursue charges, conduct trials, and secure convictions of these violent agents in state court, where Trump’s presidential pardons cannot apply.
When federal agents commit assault, break into homes or businesses without proper authority, falsely imprison residents, impersonate local law enforcement officers, intimidate witnesses, or damage property, we must hold them accountable under Minnesota law.
It is now our civic duty to record the actions of federal agents in our communities. As Trump’s U.S. Attorneys and the FBI work to shield illegal—and even deadly—misconduct, it is critical that the public document these encounters whenever possible.
