I design laboratories by day and do nerd stuff by night. Architecture, science, motorsports, computer games, SF/F lit, TTRPGs. Somewhere between SocDem and DemSoc. PFP shamelessly yoinked from Order Of The Stick, by @rich-burlew.giantitp.com.

We in fact did have this knowledge, however Los Alamos in New Mexico had to be repurposed for nuclear weapons research after failing to find an effective delivery mechanism for Hatch chiles

Found this scrolling back through old posts and am still salty that nobody appreciated my killer aerodynamics pun.

This happened to me too! I said something vaguely mean about tankies once and somebody threw me on 5 or 6 blocklists titled things like "Fascists" and "Raytheon Employees"

As an extreme example I'm thinking in particular of a former neighbor who was a frequent public nuisance, but also carried a gun at all times and liked to use the threat of it to settle arguments. Very few people are *that* guy, but there's enough of them around to poison the metaphorical well.

In addition to the racial and class aspects think this dovetails with research showing how the US in particular is a paranoid and low-trust society. When interacting with strangers are tinged with the threat of potential violence, it's more comfortable to delegate that interaction to the state.

I think there's nuance in that *selfish* noise can and should be discouraged... think the guy on the bus blasting tunes for himself, or the tuned sports car with the antisocial loud exhaust. But conversation, protest, parties, shared music, etc... that's part of being a human in a shared space.

(And I'm saying this as somebody with sensory issues, who's currently boosting Rockwool's bottom line as I build a Fortress of Quietude in my basement...)

*People* sounds, within sane limits, are part and parcel of living in community with others. Some are pleasant, others less so, but some level of background hubbub is a vital part of living *with* others and not just *around* them.

I was all ready to Have A Disagreement until I read closer. *Noise pollution* is a real public health problem... and one that the development of car-centric, "quiet" suburbia has foisted upon urban-dwelling populations (in the form of car infra.) that have limited political capacity to stop it.

I did some poking around with 2024 numbers and the current wild swings seen in special elections, and at this point R gerrymanders are all looking like dummymanders. Much more concerned about the Senate killing the filibuster to pass the SAVE act or ICE occupying polling stations

One grandpa went from rural lineman to mainframe programmer to upper management over a decades-long career with the Phone Company.

The other was a Marine turned Secret Service agent who was on the protection details for five Presidents, started a courier service, then retired to a cattle ranch.

I design labs and cleanroom pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities... the energy and consumables inputs (HEPA filters, PPE, etc.) required to maintain a sterile environment suitable for compounding injectables is mind-boggling, unfortunately.

A fictional map charting the migration and divergence of DnD-style fantasy species.

What, you don't map out the migration routes and evolutionary history of your homebrew tabletop fantasy setting? That's weird. You're weird! THIS IS TOTALLY NORMAL

Nope, nope-nope-nope-nope… you know how AI keeps writing nonsense legal briefs? What if we did that but with an even denser and more functional legal document? What could possibly go wrong?

I've been trying without much success to pitch my wife on the benefits of urban living, but this evening I showed her a listing for a second-story walkup over a sushi place and she's spent the last twenty minutes looking at their menu and making mournful noises.

The fix most commonly floated is to push liability onto officers via insurance, but in the absence of the political willpower to do so... I say the KCPD are under the state's control, the state ought to pay. Make Jeff City foot the bill for the culture they've created in the department.

I will never judge somebody for masking, and I really like that post-pandemic we have masking as an added tool in the arsenal to protect those around us when we're under the weather regardless of the bug -- but yeah, some folks are a bit out of their minds about it.

My dad’s cousin is working through this process now to try and get his trans granddaughter out of Texas.

Why he thought moving the family to *Alberta* would be a huge improvement, I don’t know, but his heart’s in the right place at least
