It's not clear to me that this is a sensible way to estimate 'replacement'.
The sky is not falling; high-quality platforms (Prolific, Verasight, CR Connect) have low rates of apparent bots. osf.io/preprints/ps... But also not zero; vigilance is very much needed!
It's paperclips all the way down. If only someone had thought about this before.

Last class in a specific course today. Only afterwards did I realize I could have used this ever-insightful SMBC strip:
Yeah, I'd agree it's not academic specific. But it changed how I wrote overnight when I read it in grad school
And yeah, Pinker has problems, but this one can stay on the shelf a while longer...
What book on academic writing, easily digested by grads, would you recommend?
I've been recommending Pinker's for years, but it's been a long time since I read (or re-read it).

For our recent paper - on naive humans reinventing how to shape early stone tools - we did sth unusual and sth (hopefully) useful:
We included an FAQ section in the supplementary material
New methods may benefit from such FAQ's being included.

Oh, he deleted that, but not the original!? Weird
I missed this due to time zones. What was deleted? I had otherwise been following this little drama
For sure, "prompts per hour per user" is a metric they're hacking, anticipating that if that lines goes up, the money line will go up in the future
ahh, but have you ever purchased a knock-off knife-missile from the pound store? That's also morally bad!
I mean, ChatGPT has won, right? They've got a government contract with a war-mongering fascist regime. They money spigot is on until the regime is out.
Boycotting ChatGPT is like boycotting Raytheon. I agree not to buy weapons of war from the war-weapon company!
Also:
Linux may strike fear into the hearts of many, but Ubuntu works out of the box and the tiny learning curve is offset by the absence of bloatware and AI.
You can even partition your hard-drive and dual boot if you need windows. It's very easy to do.
This actually makes sense. My brother (in Australia) regularly posts racist shite from these rags, long before I've even caught a whisper of the narrative. As far as he's concerned, London has fallen.
People who "write" (prompt) this stuff fall further in my esteem than if they accidentally posted the search terms they use for porn.
Also, look at who he is citing. lol. I have no doubt that LLMs are doing better social science than *some* of us.
This is just Action Short of a Strike (ASOS)?
Certainly it seems like it should work... but we academics are pretty bad at doing it holding the line, because (IMO) a) we treat our profession as a vocation, b) we don't want to impose on our colleagues, and c) it's normally self-harm to not do it.
I seem to recall that this paper received some strong pushback a few years ago. Do I remember correctly, and if so, can anyone point me the direction of the critique?
My new computer just arrived, and yet I still have to work. How is this fair?
Met up with a friend last night at the Whiskey Society.
'Cask Strength' can really take you by surprise...
Does that say 'Operation: Epic Fury'.
JD Vance named that. I'll put money down that he'll drop an 'Over 9000' reference in the next 3 months.
"Corsair RELAXED TC100"
Not the top end of the market, but better than my last chair which I obtained either by theft from my last institution, or by inheriting it from a neighbor during the pandemic. I geniunely can't remember
My god. It reclines to horizontal. I know how I'm dealing with camera-off meetings going forward.
Got a new office chair. Quality of life improvement is visceral.
I upgraded from the older model to this. It worked out of the box (though some assembly necessary), and haven't had issues in a year of solid use. It has an auto leveler function which is non-negotiable (having had to do it manually before, I'm never going back)

Fascinating! Thanks
