Here she is with Jane Addams, am I right? And is Addams actually *smiling*? (Rare.)

I'm loving Melinda Plastas' book that puts Addie Hunton in the context of women's #WWI #peace activism.
Hunton also traveled to Haiti with Emily Balch (see Day 11!) to document US occupation there as part of a Women's International League for Peace and Freedom delegation.

Day 12 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld: US #peace activist and organizer Addie Hunton!
Hunton rethought Black #internationalism and promoted racial justice as a condition of peace. To quote Melinda Plastas, she “helped usher in a reconfigured Black political consciousness."

Thank you and for your fabulous podcast!
Am listening to Courtney B. Vance’s audiobook reading of David Levering Lewis’s bio of WEB Du Bois and it is a MASTERPIECE.
I have 12 hours to go on vol 1 and never want it to end.
Happy birthday to an incredible voice.
Thank you so much! Credit goes to these fascinating women themselves . . .

Day11 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld: US economist and pacifist Emily Greene Balch!
Balch rethought economic justice for immigrants and working women. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 for rethinking international law and leading the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.

Congratulations! Please take that day off but tell us your title in the meantime!
Love this! Huge thanks to Anna and Katie for making a brilliant thinker more accessible

For more on Helene Stöcker, here's a short piece I wrote in @psyche.co last year--her complicated fight against war and fascism is more relevant than ever.

Day 10 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld: German philosopher, feminist, and pacifist Helene Stöcker!
Stöcker used #Nietzsche to rethink the value of the values holding women back. She also rethought the value of war; her radical #pacifism forced her to flee the Nazis in 1933.

For more on Mary Church Terrell's pacifist activism, I loved this interview with Dr. Noaquia Callahan Banks.

Day 9 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld: US suffragist & activist Mary Church Terrell.
Terrell rethought #pacifism to foreground racial justice, arguing that “you may talk about permanent peace till doomsday, but the world will never have it till the darker races are given a square deal.”
#herstory
For more on Zetkin, I highly recommend @kristingjesdal.bsky.social's incisive interview with @herplacepod.bsky.social, especially re Zetkin's analysis of fascism. She died in exile in 1933--she knew what she was talking about.

Day 8 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld HAD to be philosopher Clara Zetkin!
Zetkin rethought women's role in socialism, insisting on working women's inclusion in feminism. She also originated International Women's Day!

Andreja Novakovic wrote beautifully about Blow and other American women Hegelians here: it's a rich tradition!

Day 7 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld: American philosopher and educator Susan E. Blow
Blow rethought American education by using Hegel (yes, Hegel) to advocate for American kindergartens. Opposing industrialized schooling, she insisted on play as a crucial to all children’s education.
#herstory
I hope they also stock Hegel.
Great tip. Am doing this now by reading Frances Ellen Watkins Harper and Jessie Fauset as I research Mary Church Terrell’s pacifism. All three are fabulous thinkers and writers!
Bad news, good news: in posting about @sandrineankara.bsky.social's wonderful essay about Anna Julia Cooper, I accidentally attached ANOTHER wonderful essay about Cooper by Rachel Falkenstern. An embarrassment of riches! Apologies to Prof Bergès and here is the right one!

Day 6 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld: Hungarian feminist Rosika Schwimmer!
A radical #pacifist & refugee, Schwimmer rethought American citizenship by refusing to swear to take up arms to defend the country. She took her case to the US Supreme Court & lost in 1929. She died stateless

Day 5 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld: philosopher and historian Anna Julia Cooper!
Cooper rethought 19th century ideas of progress to define race and foreground women. To quote bell hooks: “one of the first black activists to urge black women to articulate their own experiences.”

I got caught in the middle of a smuggling ring on a train between Estonia and Warsaw in the mid 1990s
Congratulations to @sandrineankara.bsky.social and @alanmsjcoffee.bsky.social on this important book!

Continuing to listen to David Levering Lewis's riveting biography of Du Bois.
In today's chapter, Lewis suggested that Du Bois combined the voices of Sojourner Truth and Schopenhauer and I have not been able to think straight since.
