The Zahn lab is transitioning into the TIDAL Lab this Fall and moving to the Appl. Sci. Department at William & Mary.
Would love to chat with students interested in doing a PhD at the nexus of microbial ecology and data science (starting 2026).
RP please!

We are on the lookout for postdocs for two different projects at the intersection of ecology, evolution, and the human microbiome.
See thread for more information and reach out!
So excited about this!! Can you add me as well, please?
Thank you everyone who came to see my talk at #ASLO yesterday! Been having such an inspiring time hearing, seeing, and talking about amazing aquatic science!
Also Charlotte has been so beautiful this spring! So much fun exploring with @akrinos.bsky.social and @kjehickman.bsky.social!

RP PLS! IΚ»m hiring 3 postdocs at U HawaiΚ»i to study yeast diversity and evolution, marine fungi, and the genomics of microbiomes in experimental foodwebs. All of these projects have existing datasets and LATITUDE to pursue individual interests and "blue sky" ideas www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/5d7u4...
The new outline of fungi and fungus-like taxa is out now. Why do we need to do this so often? Because there are so many fungal species and only about 5-10% have descriptions. New genera, families etc are frequently being added to the tree. π§ͺ π #fungi #mycosky www.mycosphere.org/pdf/MYCOSPHE...
Iβd like to be added to this as well!! Currently researching in marine biodiversity and branching into science policy πͺπΌ
We must mainstream nature. Economy, security, & health depend on nature but current policy development often overlooks nature's critical roles. Siloed approaches are insufficient-integrated policies that consider the interconnections among policy domains are needed www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Fungi are relevant to policies governing each aforementioned area: humans, land, ocean. Whether in terms of economy, food, medicine, biodiversity loss, conservation, or research, fungi deserve our attention and inclusion in policy decisions.
In the ocean, fungi decompose organic matter, act as plant and animal symbionts, and cycle nutrients. Some fungi have even shown efficient capacity to break down plastic polymers. Interestingly, fungi are ubiquitous across ocean ecosystems!
On land, fungi act as plant pathogens, support plant health and soil ecology, rehabilitate ecosystems, and cycle carbon.
In relation to humans, fungi source medicine, illness, And food (like beer and bread), participate in microbiomes, and are invaluable research subjects.
Fungi are important members of most ecosystems. They decompose organic matter, act in animal microbiomes, form mycorrhizal networks, serve as crops and pathogens, rehabilitate ecosystems, and cycle carbon.
My latest pub explores a few potential implications that fungi could have in policy! If your interested, hereβs a thread πͺ‘π§΅
