But I do know I want to burn it all down. I know that I do the best I can, and even though it never feels like enough, I am trying.

Because I was so deep in the belly of it? To prove that I am “one of the good ones”? Or do I write these things because I did not ask to be in the beast’s belly, and I want to use my privilege to amplify the harms I saw? I don’t know. I’m just thinking into the keys.

I don’t have any solutions rn. Only reflections. But I know, as I sit here, sipping my “fair trade” coffee, that it’s our entire system. All the interlocking parts—global food systems, oil and gas, the drug trade (funded by the CIA), etc. And why do I feel the need to center my experience?

My thoughts are all over the place, but my main feeling is that hyper consumption is a disease. The drugs consumed in bathroom stalls at clubs. The margaritas sucked down as smoke rises from over the fence. I feel it when I sit in traffic on 75. It’s sickening, and I am complicit. Most of us are.

Tourism is yet another form of extraction and exploitation. I’ll never forget watching the gross French tourists in Cancun gathered around a sea turtle laying her eggs. I was beside myself with anxiety as the employee told them repeatedly to turn off their flash lights and keep their distance.

I think that’s where my radicalization began. I couldn’t reconcile the suffering I saw with the luxury I lived in. The poor children who swarmed our car, begging for money at the airport in Douala. Kids my age and younger. Those “drug wars” in the favelas in Rio. The 1984 Bread Riots in Tunis.

Being a Big Oil (or similar) expat in places like Cameroon, Tunisia, and Brasil, carries that same separation from the people and place. You live a cushy, insular life while extracting resources—a process that poisons and maims and does not “trickle down” to the native population at all.

The disconnect between the tourists in Zona Hotelera and the people living through hell in Mexico reminds me of being an expat oil brat in Rio de Janeiro in 1989, watching the Shell employee softball game at my swanky private school while police helicopters fired machine guns into the favela nearby.
