After all, why not? Why shouldn't I keep it?

This looks very interesting thanks for sharing. We can get so caught up in β€œstatistical validity” that’s people seem to forget everything that comes before it - far more important in my view

100% agreed. We used cognitive interviewing as part of a recent scale development and got extremely valuable data about the latent trait at all levels of the items bsky.app/profile/john.... To our knowledge the only paper to have done so thus far, hopefully it will become more widely used in time!

If you would like to get in touch to discuss the paper I would love to speak, and you can reach me at jmartind@ed.ac.uk

I am indebted to my co-authors David Hughes, Paul Irwing and Leigha Rose for the immense amount of hard work they put into this paper, and @jdmiller.bsky.social and @drlynam.bsky.social for their support and advice at a critical juncture for the project last summer.

Example of think-aloud-protocol results

Of special note is the use of a think-aloud-protocol study: qualitative interviews that assess the cognitive mechanisms underlying response processes. It therefore provides direct evidence of whether items are accurately measuring their target construct at all levels of the latent trait.

Psychometrically, the FDT was developed using the @david-j-hughes.bsky.social Accuracy and Appropriateness model, which provides a comprehensive set of evidentiary criteria for determining whether a test (1) measures what it purports to, and (2) is useful for some specified purpose.

Our measure provides the field with a comprehensive and redundancy-free set of facets that captures all elements argued to be of importance to Psychopathy, Narcissism and Machiavellianism, thereby providing a platform for resolving conceptual debates over the composition of the three constructs.

The FDT builds upon the basic trait approach, used so successfully by @jdmiller.bsky.social and @drlynam.bsky.social, by consolidating the facets across their Elemental Psychopathy Assessment, Five Factor Narcissism Inventory and Five Factor Machiavellianism Inventory measures.

Development and Validation of the Faceted Dark Triad (FDT) Scale

We set about addressing this issue in a comprehensive, rigorous, and multi-study scale development process that is now published and available open-access at Assessment: journals.sagepub.com/doi/epdf/10.....

Psychopathy, Narcissism and Machiavellianism are implicated in many of the most significant societal issues we face, including crime, destructive leadership, bullying and even terrorism. However, debate persists about how effectively they are captured by existing measures.

We are awarding our President's Medal to 'In Our Time' as it has done so much to showcase humanities & social sciences. We'd decided this before the news of Melvyn Bragg stepping down, but glad we got our timing right & had a chance to celebrate with him!

I grew up in SW zone 4 / 5. To me it's wherever you wouldn't preface with a compass direction. Mayfair yes, Chelsea & Kensington no. Southwark yes, Elephant & Castle no. Liverpool St yes, Shoreditch no. Kings Cross yes, Camden no. It's ephemeral but it's there, and you def say "go up / in to".
