Instead of forcing all oil to stay domestic, it’s often more profitable for the U.S. to import heavy crude from Canada and export light crude elsewhere.
🇺🇸 refineries are optimized for heavy crude, which 🇨🇦 produces in large quantities.Much of the 🇺🇸 ‘s own crude oil is light, which requires different refining processes.
Why Not Just Import Oil from elsewhere or produce it domestically? Because Canada is a more efficient and cost-effective supply.
The extensive pipeline infrastructure between the two countries (Keystone, Enbridge) makes Canadian oil cheaper and more accessible than shipping from overseas.
