If you tried to explain to a retro game influencer type that the Neo Geo AES was an expensive home console but the Neo Geo MVS was an inexpensive arcade platform and also they're basically the same except for the cartridge pinouts and the BIOS they're going to shit themselves from overthinking this.

I love how the Neo Geo is both the most expensive video game thing ever but also nobody knows anything about it at all apparently.

Problem is that this has a negative stigma attached to it for various reasons, like a lot of devs assuming that playing games well is beyond them. This is a real problem and doesn't make sense because in most other artforms critical feedback isn't *JUST* "do this" but "improve yourself"

03.03.2026 07:44 👍 42 🔁 2 💬 2 📌 0

Sometimes when giving feedback on games, "play more of the type of game you're making/play them more seriously" is honestly the best most sensible advice even if it comes off rude. It's rly obvious when a dev doesn't have that baseline experience that'd make more particular feedback useful

Super Mario RPG English/Japanese Comparison, Part 9/13 [Legends of Localization stream] YouTube video by Clyde Mandelin

found it in youtu.be/H5uFfmJjC6Q?... — seems like it's along the lines of "使ってみる" (I'll try and see) and "あやしいので、 使わない" (Seems dodgy so, I won't use it). the Woolsey version seems good at preserving that spirit of openness vs. dubiousness.

i cant imagine how bad an MTPE translation of a game like segagaga where every single line is buried in layers of deep otaku references is but im not about to self harm by playing it to check

27.02.2026 23:56 👍 224 🔁 38 💬 7 📌 1

It doesn't matter how truthful you might be about the process or how much human oversight there really was in the end. You owe it to both those devs and fellow translators fighting tooth and nail to keep our occupation alive to produce a translation that is completely human from start to finish.

28.02.2026 00:36 👍 507 🔁 76 💬 1 📌 0

I will not mince words: Segagaga is a deeply personal, human game about passionate developers making the best of a bad situation. This is not the first patch to employ MTPE as a shortcut, but it is particularly tone deaf to deploy in this climate for a game about the people who made Sega what it is.

You are setting the tone for that work. You are giving it a voice. You are saying your words represent the content, its identity, and its creators' intent as best you could. With games especially, full retranslations are rare; your work is going to be treated as the canon portrayal, like it or not.

I say this as a professional who came up from fan translation and has friends at Sega who will likely never get to work on this officially: when you fan translate ANYTHING that was previously untranslated, you have a deep, heavy responsibility in setting people's first and typically only impression.

Last thing I'll say about this, for my own peace of mind: what historically made SGGG so hard to TL was all technical reasons, and it sounds like they solved all that! But to then cut corners like this on *the translation itself* is just losing sight of why you're doing this in the first place.

28.02.2026 01:19 👍 125 🔁 22 💬 1 📌 1

I'm so fucking mad, Segagaga finally getting translated should've been a landmark moment. One of the white whales of translation should've had more care given to it than to outsource the bulk of the work to fucking ChatGPT. With a game of this legacy, you either do it right or don't do it all.

27.02.2026 23:47 👍 512 🔁 170 💬 3 📌 2

If you feel that use of AI art assets at any stage of the process is an automatic out, but ChatGPT translations are fine if they're "checked" by people, it might be worth asking yourself why that is. Because it sounds a whole lot like valuing the work of translators less than other creatives to me.

i think it's this in reverse; suggestions and autocorrects for GraphAI misspelled as "grafai".
there also appears to be a Pokemon TCG box set featuring Grafaiai, but then you'd also expect other semi-recent box set features like (Mega) Kangaskhan, Palafin, etc. to rank highly here, but they haven't

Just in case anybody's thinking they're okay because they're still on Windows 10: this feature still exists in Win10 (22H2), it's just not On by default (at least not on my end). STILL, THOUGH, double-check it yourself and save yourself a potential heartbreak.

>credit card verification

so you admit that biometric verification is largely superfluous, overly invasive and also completely unnecessary as it yields no immediate benefits over other kinds of identity verification. so... why are you still pushing biometric verification lmao

(i know why)

He also mentions he came up with the name for GuitarFreaks, which tracks as KCEJ and Kojima were also involved with the early home ports of GF+DrumMania, plus the early IIDX ports; I imagine them being busier with MGS3 and such was probably why they didn't continue with those

Reminds me of how a lot of Bemani titles are also technically KojiPro since KCEJ also did them and Kojima produced them, most notably all the PS1 Beatmanias; there was an old tweet of his where he mentioned it was his idea to have them do it, so you could tell they were into it from the get-go.

Polite reminder to genuinely no one in particular that if you do a Kojima Productions retrospective and you pretend they only made two adventure games instead of five because three of them have dating sim cooties, I'm gonna legit turn into a ghost and haunt you in your sleep while I'm still alive.

ds is ouendan/eba, and psp is the same but you just press buttons since no touchscreen lol. also the console versions are just dance. then 3ds/vita/iOS is a different game entirely (touch screen gestures).
