It was inspiring to see such a diversity of perspectives and expertise gathered in one room. This is only the beginning; we look forward to NIBAI 2026 in Bristol and to the collaborations that will continue to grow from NIBAI.
Over two days, we explored the fundamental principles of intelligence through stimulating talks, lively discussions, and genuine interdisciplinary exchange. Insights from genes, brains, behaviour, and machines came together to deepen our understanding of intelligence across natural and AI.
NIBAI 2025 Workshop on the Nature of Intelligence was held in Sheffield, bringing together over 70 participants from diverse backgrounds in neuroscience, animal cognition, philosophy, and AI.
Thanks to @asab.org the @sheffielduni.bsky.social, and @devjoni.bsky.social for sponsoring this event.
For details on sessions, speakers, and timings, please see the Workshop Agenda. Titles and abstracts are available under Speaker Information. sites.google.com/sheffield.ac...
Key questions weβll explore:
β’ Core principles of natural intelligence & their sources
β’ Measuring intelligence across animals & AI
β’ Translating βmessyβ biology into algorithms
β’ Next steps for biologist-AI collaboration

Excited to welcome everyone to the ASAB Interdisciplinary Workshop: Nature of Intelligence
The two-day agenda is packed with inspiring talks, discussions, and a panel exploring the frontiers of natural and artificial intelligence.

How do flies keep crystal-clear vision while zipping through the air? πͺ°
This study reveals synaptic high-frequency jumping, a mechanism where photoreceptor synapses recode vision into high-frequency signals, enabling synchronised, coherent perception even at lightning speed. #vision #neuroscience
How is the nervous system organized to coordinate behavior? To approach this massive question, a team led by @asbates.bsky.social, @jasper-tms.bsky.social, @mindyisminsu.bsky.social, & Helen Yang present the BANC: a Brain and Nerve Cord connectome.

Fascinating findings! It seems cognitive processes can unfold much faster than we typically expect. Importantly, the commonly assumed speed-accuracy tradeoff may not hold in rapid decision-making contexts; consistent with findings we've seen in bees: lnkd.in/e_cdCdcH

We are still accepting abstracts for both talks and posters for this conference. We are also hoping to build a network for our next conference in 2026, where we will do our best to ensure a more balanced set of speakers. Thank you!
Hello! Yes, this is unfortunate - we tried to have a better balance for our keynote speakers, but sadly several of our female keynote speakers cancelled their talks recently. We are aiming to select a much more even set of speakers for our 15-min talks, and half of the session chairs will be women.
Free registration with complimentary lunch and networking opportunities!

We look forward to welcoming you to Sheffield! @minibraincognition.bsky.social @adbridges.bsky.social @alibohra.bsky.social
Β· Present your own research through our community talks and poster sessions.
Network with experts from across academia and industry.
Β· Be part of a growing research community β we have begun building the network for a follow-up meeting to be hosted by the Royal Society in 2026.
Why you should attend:
Β· Learn from world-class keynote speakers including Andrew Barron, Josep Call, Gonzalo de Polavieja, Mikko Juusola, Aurel Lazar, James Marshall, Robert Plomin, Maria Tello Ramos, Giorgio Vallortigara, Barbara Webb
This two-day workshop aims to bridge the gap between animal behaviour, systems neuroscience, bio-inspired robotics, and artificial intelligence. We are bringing together pioneers and leading researchers to explore the fundamental principles of intelligence and foster new collaborations.
