I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections
Teachers: we really need supports for complex needs in classrooms, lower class sizes, better working conditions, and appropriate funding
UCP: best we can do is a book ban

As an educator, it’s increasingly difficult to name a professional conviction or pedagogical commitment that justifies the use of generative AI. The daily use of AI must not overshadow tangible actions to redress our climate crisis lest we further erode our position as trusted stewards of learning.
There is an article in this month’s NCTE Council Chronicle that celebrates the opportunities the author says AI brings to classrooms. Nowhere in there were any of the ways we don’t want AI in classrooms -
information theft, support of modern slavery, and destruction of climate. It is *disappointing*
Reading is such an extraordinary gift. It’s so incredible that there is no center in the brain for it. It’s an entirely learned activity, not at all innate to us! And it unlocks so much human flourishing and much joy and happiness
Oh you don’t think I should go to a college where all the courses are planned by AI? Well let me remind you of the wise words of the philosopher Plato: “Plato is a soft, clay-like substance that comes in different colors and is used by children for making models”
