I’ve been asked if I would support Sen. Mullin as Noem’s replacement.

The answer is a resounding NO. The rot in DHS is deep, much deeper than any individual.

It’s a question of policy not personnel. The Senate should not consider any DHS Secretary nominee until DHS and ICE are reined in.

I know! it's a problem! I'm hoping it's temporary. In the meantime I'll just have to enlist outside help

I've severely limited caffeine for medical reasons and it's amazing how little coffee I need to add to a cup of water to trick myself. I swear, I drink it and my brain goes "yeah, that's brown, must be coffee." I can do it all day, 5 'cups of coffee' at 80% water a cup.

LLMs are valuable in tasks that
1. Are difficult/time consuming
2. Let work be checked before it takes effect
3. Can be tested for correctness completely and with little time/effort

Unfortunately this describes roughly 0 tasks professionals perform that aren't already automated.

Exactly the same feeling over here in software. A lot of time spent reviewing code that looks extremely entry level and wishing all that effort weren't just being thrown down a hole

I've genuinely considered updating version numbering on the apps I work on to skip anything too close to that 4 digit sequence because I have the same reaction. We can just go from 14.87 to 14.89 like an elevator skipping the 13th floor.

Maryland, New Mexico Become Latest Blue States to Ban Local Contracts with ICE - Bolts Governors Lujan Grisham and Moore signed laws barring local sheriffs and police from partnering with ICE’s 287(g) program, joining a string of eight states with similar prohibitions.

Isn't it time for Massachusetts to pass legislation to protect people? #MAPoli

Tunic, Night in the Woods Publisher Says TikTok Is Creating and Running Racist GenAI Ads for Its Games Without Permission - IGN Publisher Finji says that TikTok has been using generative AI to modify its ads on the platform without permission and pushing those ads to its users without Finji's knowledge, including at least one ...

Dug into this absolutely wild thing happening to Finji. The deeper I read into their increasingly baffling conversations with TikTok "support" the more I felt like I was on something.

Nosferatu (2024). I still want that 132 minutes back. It was nothing! it was all carefully arranged beautifully costumed nothing! It was like eating soup flavored soup and spending two hours trying to figure out what flavor it was supposed to be.

A SE (drywaller) often truly believes they have the same job as an SE (architect). They genuinely don't understand the difference in the work. So they see the LLM do a big chunk of their work (hanging drywall) passably w/ close supervision and think "wow! This thing can design & build houses"

18.02.2026 15:27 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

As someone working in software with coworkers who use genAI this is largely true, with an additional wrinkle. The term "software engineer" (SE) is very overloaded. Some people w/ that title will tell you genAI is good. But It's like calling everyone from structural engineers to drywallers "builders"

I'm at their second benefit show right now. (They just opened their 3rd set with "American Idiot.) These white suburban parents are wearing t-shirts with slogans like "RADICALIZED BY BASIC HUMAN DECENCY" and "NO ONE IS ILLEGAL ON STOLEN LAND BUILT BY STOLEN HANDS." (4/?)

Stock go up because AI is going to replace all the workers is one of the goofiest bets that the whole market seems to be buying.

Either it's wrong, AI isn't magic, that won't happen, stock values collapse.

Or it's right, AI is magic, everyone gets fired, whole economy (incl. stock value) collapses

"We _can_ build whatever we want, but..."

Not that I'm endorsing this as a good thing. I just see how having that feeling in the right context could feel very profound and religious.

Also makes sense for certain eating disorders, and for fad diets/fasting. Some people just really crave particular altered states in unhealthy ways.

Did you get that strange breakthrough effect eventually? I had very restricted eating for ~10 days a while back and it was hunger to Hunger! to eventually sort of transcendent feeling.

Made fasting in religious practices make a lot of sense all of a sudden

Prosperity gospel has got to be up there in terms of worst interpretations of Christianity. The Hyde to Protestant work ethic's Jekyll.

There's an issue of audience I think. I find the article lays out details that paint an appropriately damning picture in a way that feels clear to me (an avid news consumer) and likely to the author.

I fear that the read from much of the audience (more casual news consumers) will not be so acute

It's like with credit cards. AmEx issues cards, tracks users money & spending, makes all the usual features and benefits, but you still can't use an AmEx card at a store that doesn't take it. The store (or the checkout terminal) has to do the work to accept it

Then there's the work of converting the user's claim into access in the specific subscription system that the platform uses. Unless these platforms already use the same internal access control system they individually need to translate from our hypothetical standard claim to their internal system.

04.02.2026 21:03 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

We have standards for doing all that w/existing tech. The issue is what happens next. Presumably Beehiiv/Buttondown/whoever isn't just granting access to everything.

They have to build a way for writers to opt in to bundles, and to get paid.

04.02.2026 21:03 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

The issue is what do you do with it at that point. OAuth is great as far as this user is who they say they are, they have a claim (ex. They paid for the bundle that lets them read this), the claim can be verified (provably came from a trusted issuer, Google in my last post, the ISP here)

04.02.2026 21:03 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

ISP is an interesting angle! They might actually convince the content platform to partner. Issuing signed claims that a user has access to certain things isn't too hard (see: login with Google) but getting dozens of different platforms to accept your claims & grant access is extremely difficult.

04.02.2026 20:44 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Running the sign up platform & giving out verifiable proof that a user paid for bundle X to get access to content Y is simple. But when they show up to Beehiiv showing that proof Beehiiv (& every other platform individually) needs to have done the work to support it & give them the access

04.02.2026 20:39 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

Big technical issue is getting it to work w/ all the different platforms. Even if you build a place to bundle & set up something widely accepted like OAuth each content platform needs to do work on their side to accept your claims re:access to the content they host.
