Clusters of small yellow tulip-shaped flowers grace the thick purplish stems of a leatherleaf Mahonia. The flowers are some of the first blossoms to attract early pollinators in the weeks before the official start of spring. The plant has waxy leaves with thorny points that grow as large as 6-7 inches in the summer.
