Exactly! It was a great storytelling choice that made him that much more layered and interesting and let him have growth! But noooOOOO he’s gotta stay the exact same way he was 30 years ago. Very silly.
Right! Art by committee ain’t worth it, and pandering to people who are going to complain anyway is pointless. I’ll always take a weird bold artist-driven swing (even if it doesn’t fully land) over playing to the lowest common denominator. At least it’s got something to say.
YES!!! Like I can see the legit critiques people have of it even if I don’t agree, but it feels like A LOT of it was “the movie didn’t happen the way I expected it to, how dare they” and general unwillingness to let characters be human (you know, interesting) and evolve.
SAME, it’s such a beautiful, lovingly made movie and a good open end to leave it at, bittersweet but ultimately hopeful and I jive with that so much.
Oh god ME TOO, afterwards I was like "eh, it was subpar, can't win 'em all" but I STEWED about it for weeks which I have never done before/since. I still don't revisit it and I LOVE TFA/TLJ.
The Chewie death fakeout was when I realized that it was off the rails and I checked out.
