I have other names for it, most of them untranslatable: think somewhere between Always, and Blink, and you approach the meaning if not the words. Surely, anything but a bomb is true. Surely, if this is a real celebration and not another manic ritual of brutal distraction, we would create a reprieve from burning? Surely the sky is desperate for silence, or else the hard and beautiful work of birds? Once, we could see the stars unaided, the perfect light of memory, and now we have only this snap, crackle, pop. You will not believe me, child, but once we could see the stars, and it was glorious.

Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality.
