Excerpt from Rutgers University Senate resolution calling for a Mutual Academic Defense Compact. The excerpt reads: "BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Rutgers University Senate urges the President of Rutgers University to formally propose and help establish a Mutual Academic Defense Compact (MADC) among all members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, under this compact, all participating institutions shall commit meaningful funding to a shared or distributed defense fund. This fund shall be used to provide immediate and strategic support to any member institution under direct political or legal infringement;"
This exciting resolution from Rutgers University Senate is exactly the kind of model I think higher ed needs: a mutual defense pact of, in this case, Big 10 schools. They call for member institutions to create a joint defense fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.

Passage from Carl Saganโs 1995 book, the demon haunted world. The passage states โ not explaining science seems to me perverse. When youโre in love, you want to tell the world. This book is a personal statement, reflecting, my lifelong love affair with science. but thereโs another reason: Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a four boating of an America in my childrenโs or grandchildrenโs time - when the United States is a service or information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those and authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good, and whatโs true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness. The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media. The 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially, a kind of celebration of ignorance.

The age of human tyranny was cruelโbut flawed. AI tyranny will be perfect. It will know you better than you know yourself. It will shape your reality before you resist. And if we lose democracy now, we may never get another chance to win it back
AI will transform our democracy. Now is the time for states to set up guardrails to protect personal data, improve transparency and ensure election security.
Democracy isn't just about votingโit's about collectively seeking truth. @shadihamid.bsky.social's "democratic minimalism" dangerously ignores this, paving the way for autocracy in the age of AI and misinformation. My new piece on why democracy without truth is no democracy at all.

โLesser Ground Cuckoo.โ Side view of a Lesser Ground Cuckoo bird facing right, in Costa Rica. This cuckoo, like a real one, has a distinctive bright blue and yellow pattern around its round eye, giving the appearance of a giant almost human-looking eye shape with heavy black eyeliner. The bird has a yellow/gold breast, a tannish back and a long black tail, all covered with patterns. Its pinkish legs and claws are visible as it stands on a thin log. All around the bird, stylized green and black leaves are twining up, down and all around, providing a sense of movement. On the bottom left is a large green leafy plant. The ground is brown.
