Love it π
Those evenings when all the trains are delayed, lots of people are stuck at the station, there are planets in the sky, and I wish I had my little telescope π so I could do some guerrilla astronomy π
I was impressed by the committee, too. They asked some really good questions.
The passion from all three of you was obvious, great job! π
Rows of people wearing orange lanyards in a House of Commons committee hearing. At the front is Catherine sporting her "I'm about to perform an appendectomy" mask and looking particularly snazzy.
Here is my run-down of today's Science, Information & Technology Committee hearing (House of Commons) where @jonbutterworth.bsky.social @si-wills.bsky.social & I argued for no funding cuts, & Prof. Michele Doughtery explained why they were needed. The public gallery again packed with physicists ππ©βπ¬βοΈ
People sat in rows a committee hearing - all smartly dressed
Here is my run-down of today's Science and Technology Committee hearing (House of Lords) where "considerable disquiet in the science community" was raised with Sir Patrick Vallance. Really great to see the public gallery packed with physicists!
If I actually thought all these plenary speaker invites to conferences all over the place were genuine, I'd never be in the office! Has this spam escalated recently? Or am I just seeing more of them? #academiclife #conferencespam
Obama is correct. It's likely aliens exist, somewhere out there (the universe is big). It's highly unlikely they have ever visited Earth. Telescopes are being used by a lot of clever people, and we haven't found solid proof yet. Rewind to 4.55pm to hear my take on it: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
I know exactly what you mean! Juniors is so much fun π€©
If you are fed up of the bile and vitriol on social media, Iβd strongly recommend going out and volunteering with real people. Building human connections is so important for mental health, and it can be a lot of fun. I laughed so much at parkrun yesterday my face hurt π€£ #loveparkrun #volunteer
So can I now :(
It was a beautiful cosmic coincidence!
What a display!
And also in The Netherlands #aurora
A green band of light horizontally across the sky. A building is on the right side of the frame and some trees run along the bottom of the view. The bottom half of Orion is visible in the sky at the top left.
Aurora! π€© Right now over NW England #LookUp #astronomy #aurora
Iβd rather it was done with reusable tech wherever possible, including robots, and not just for cost reasons. As for inspiration, there are so many ways to enthuse but Iβm not sure you can beat human landings for sheer scale!
Yes, that was me on BBC News again today! Now, the SLS might be bonkers, but even so Iβm really looking forward to seeing humans go back to the Moon. Thereβs important sciencing to be done, and I hope it inspires a whole new generation of scientists and engineers π π π€©
I talked about the year in review and a preview of 2026 with Johnny I'Anson on BBC 5 Live last night: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... (scroll to 1h30m in), and just now talked aurora prospects and space weather forecasting live on air with Leila Nathoo.
There will be a partial eclipse visible across the UK and Ireland (90-97%!) in August, the potential for more aurora, the usual round of meteor showers to watch out for, and hopefully the first humans visiting the Moon since the 1970s.
It's been an exciting year in space, with new telescopes commissioned, lots of rocket launches and lunar landings, space tourism, "stranded" astronauts on both the ISS and Tiangong space stations, a potentially hazardous asteroid, and an interstellar comet! Lots more to look forward to in 2026...
Nice! Have fun on breakfast π
Any sign of alien activity?! π
A view of the sky looking east/south-east at 10pm tonight, made using Stellarium. Gemini is in the East with the two brightest stars in the constellation sitting one directly above the other. The radiant (boxed position, where the meteors will appear to originate) is just above two bright stars in Gemini known as Castor and Pollux. Jupiter is below Pollux and to the right. Orion is at roughly the same height above the horizon, but around to the south-east.
The #Geminid #MeteorShower peaks tonight! Best time to look is between 10pm and 2am when the Moon rises and spoils the fun. Meteors will appear to come from a position in the constellation of Gemini (the box in the image). Look out for Jupiter too, just below the two bright stars, and Orion nearby!
<rant> The amount of admin involved in bidding for (even) internal funds to do something small is utterly ridiculous. It feels like everything is so gummed up with red tape. On the one hand, universities need academics to bring in money, but it's made so difficult and time consuming π€― </end rant>
And explore the latest space debris numbers here: www.esa.int/Space_Safety...
You can read more about the story here: www.space.com/space-explor...
I spoke to Tim Franks on Newshour on the BBC World Service at lunchtime, and then Evan Davis on PM on BBC Radio 4 this evening - you can listen (in the UK) here: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... (skip to 26 minutes in)
More space junk in the news! The crew rotation on the Chinese space station was disrupted last week due to space debris cracking the glass in a window of the Shenzhou 20 capsule. In between meetings I've been doing media interviews about the problem - and why debris is becoming a regular issue.
A coffee cup and a plate of pancakes. Also on the table is a visitor ID for BBC Breakfast.
A suspension bridge over Salford Quays with birds swimming over the reflection of the bridge.
Lovely morning in Salford! If only it had been this nice last night, might have seen the #supermoon π
