A small brown sparrow perches on a branch of a hawthorn bush surrounded by glossy green leaves and bright red berries. The bird’s soft, buff-brown feathers catch the sunlight, and pieces of crushed berry cling to the tip of its beak as it pauses mid-meal. Several berries around it show hollowed centres where they’ve already been eaten, while the blurred green background makes the warm reds and earthy tones of the bird stand out.

The Mother Mallard (Hen) Appearance: She is medium sized with a long, flattened body. Her feathers are not brightly coloured like the male (drake); instead, she is mottled with shades of buff, tan, and dark brown, designed to blend in with tall grass and water weeds. Head and Bill: She has a dark stripe running through her eye and a darker crown on her head. Her bill is often a mottled orange and brown, or just dark grey/orange. Wings: When at rest, you might see a patch of iridescent blue-purple feathers on her wing, bordered by white. This is called a "speculum". Behaviour: She is usually very watchful, leading her young in a line, often swimming in front, stopping frequently to check on them.
