A pair of B-24 Liberators over Normandy on the day of the invasion. 6 June 1944.

I always love photos that help to capture the scale of the Normandy landings. All those massive ships look like tiny toys!

In total, D-Day involved more than *7,000* Allied vessels.

The concept of "unconditional surrender" also came with a lot of planning and expectations. It actually *meant* something. It's not a word to just ostentatiously throw around!

This came after the May Offensive, also known as "Mini Tet"--the second large-scale North Vietnamese attack of 1968.

The Haul: Soldiers examine a trove of Viet Cong weapons recovered during street fighting in Saigon. Photo from 6 June 1968.

You can see a whole lot of Ak-47s (or their Chinese Type 56 variant), as well as grenades, grenade launchers, and a machine gun.

Good for them, attacking him way back in 1933. Well-deserved. (I mean, sorry about the property damage, Madame Tussauds, but...)

Man, it sucks to be called the "future of your party", doesn't it? Just a death sentence.

Classic. The fact that the soldiers look very child-like (small statures, large heads) only makes it more compelling and frightening.

Great illustration of the Battle of Leyte Gulf too!

Getting flashbacks to Fall 2024, when the most common Twitter/TikTok meme was that shot of the actors in Tropic Thunder with the caption "Me and the boys going to war because Taylor Swift told a bunch of white girls to vote Kamala"

This is just one guy going through all the motions in one night.

Honestly the two guys in front seem to be looking down at it as if afraid it's going to collapse at any second.

Big Boys: 10-inch mortars near Dutch Gap, Virginia, during the American Civil War. 1865

These guns had a maximum range of 4,300 yards, and were used both as siege artillery and as coastal defense.

So it's fair to say that sending Elefants (and Tigers, or any tank over 40ish tons) was a terrible idea, right?

Did the RiksrΓ₯d have major discussions about war aims and strategy at this time? Or were they more inclined to rubber-stamp what the King and army demanded?

This was one of the most stunning events of the war--indeed, in Greek history.

The burning of the Ottoman flagship Mansur al-liwa during the Greek War of Independence, 18 June 1822.

The Greeks used fire ships to approach the Mansur al-liwa under cover of darkness, and set the flagship ablaze. When the fire reached the gunpowder hold, the ship exploded.
