And today I spent the day driving the moving van back to Belgium. Beautiful sights in πŸ‡¨πŸ‡Ώ, a much-needed πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ breakfast, and... traffic jams from the moment I crossed the border with πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ. Let's get back to work!

Just drove my new PhD student Brianna Santamaria and all her belongings from Belgium to Czechia. An intense and tiring 11-hour drive, but we made it.

Welcome to the Laboratory of Fungal Ecology and Evolution, Brianna! #LFEE #JuniorStar

I think it is the Harlequin. There is the typical M shape on its pronotum.

So far, we found 16 insects with #Laboulbeniales ectoparasitic microfungi, out of 361 screened ones β€” marking a prevalence of 4.4%. Not bad at all! Go #TeamLaboul! @taxonexpeditions.bsky.social

It's one thing not to get an MSCA postdoc with a so-and-so proposal. It's another not getting one with an excellent proposal. I am also sad right now – but there is a 'Czech MSCA' call here, to support what they refer to as "no money projects" (= excellent but unfunded).

Xylaria longipes is a soft-rotter, slowly breaking down cellulose in wood. Cut it lengthwise and you can see the individual closed fruitbodies producing sexual spores, or perithecia, along the margin. πŸ„
