that's what I've been up to for january! if you read any of this you are super cool. it was a fun little exercise for me. see ya next month xoxo
the group's output has always followed one principle, which is, you can NEVER predict what they're gonna do next. maybe not the best starting place for their music (look into bossa nova 2001 it's *goated*) but a key turning point in their discography for sure www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKKG...
while their earliest albums are far from the ingeniously-calibrated lounge and electronic-focused work you so start to see their reverence of kitsch in the ambitious and fun (if bloated) "on her majesty's bequest," aplomb with an entire suite for a non-existent movie!
pizzicato five meanwhile is a much less well-known but a classic '90s j-pop group, spearheaders of one of my favorite obscure music genres, shibuya-kei. I adore them so deeply but rarely dug into their music before they reached their final, most iconic configuration until now
not every song on projector gets there but the best ones serve up a very satisfying post-punk flavor. you can see the inkling of greatness in all of the ideas they play with. rain dance esp is an awesome and fiery opener www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7Et...
I've also gone further back in the discogs of two VERY DIFFERENT ARTISTS that I love, geese + pizzicato five. we all know and love getting killed so I decided to work back to geese's formal debut, projector. very interesting to hear them in their infancy and some strong tracks to boot...
in a similar vein I discovered this outstanding makoto kubota album, hawaii champroo, which is just about on-par with dandy but much more under the radar. also co-produced by hosono! similar fun tropical vibes but infused with traditional okinawan folk: www.youtube.com/watch?v=a27Q...
and ofc there's also his classic second album TROPICAL DANDY, a sort of satirical regurgitation of the westernization of "exotic" music from the pacific islands through an eastern lens. he absolutely cooked with it. brings some nice warmth to the chicago winter! www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfih...
I've also been listening to lots of J-pop, especially Hosono, I'm gonna devote a lot of this year to navigating his extensive and ever-changing discography starting from the beginning. Hosono House is so intimate and cozy, maybe the most music has ever been a vibe www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy-U...
my most played album of the month was this godcaster album "long haired locusts" which randomly fell into my spotify algo and blew me away. if you love goofy art punk earworms then this is a must-listen, ridiculously fun and energetic. surprised they're not bigger! www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCyQ...
also discovered gumshoes, who apparently does a release every new year. absolutely loved his newest; cheerful, hooky, addictive indie pop with tongue-in-cheek, depressive theming. deffo gonna dig into his stuff more. recommended for those with whimsy in their heart www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJtY...
victoryland also released his debut + its the sort of album that instantly captures your attention. a lil rough around the edges but charmingly so, lots of ideas and sonic experimentation that makes for a super varied and impressive project. one to watch! www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoRz...
some really good albums to come out so far this year (and late last year): this gavin caine album is AMAZING. hasn't gotten any talk, minimal streams, no professional reviews, very quiet release, but a complete gem of scrappy DIY indie rock. get on this shit NOW!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy-1...
across last year I became super exploratory with music and have wanted to find an outlet to sorta nerd out about it, so over the next year I'll be sharing a #topster of my most played every month. so here's my january in review and some words on a few of the highlights!
YAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

me and Jackie have performed comedy in the past (I'm rusty lol) but yeah every other performer is just a friend of mine that I cherish. and everyone on the tech side of things was a hobbyist! whole thing was an insane dream that I can't believe came together.
