And is such a huge continental island that only a car could traverse...
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
A misty morning by the River Thames with the yellow sun breaking through the clouds. The tall tower of a bridge lies in the background while various boats sit on the opposite side of the river. A greylag goose is in mid flight in the foreground.
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a good 2026!
Even a Margaret Calvert one!

Chapel St East now open! ππΆββοΈπ¨βπ¦½ββ‘οΈπ΄π²ππ
Looks excellent, though I feel the signal crossing could have been designed better for cyclists rather than unintuitive shared paths and arrows
I really cannot recommend this excellent piece on Hammersmith Bridge highly enough
A plan of a segregated pedestrian, cycle and equestrian crossing, with the three crossings at a slight diagonal as they cross the road
A "trixie" crossing? One for the glossary @roads.org.uk !

Quite a nice stretch of coast near that one
FT story: A Reform UK council is proposing to increase parking charges and reduce litter picking, grass cutting and bus services as it attempts to avoid having to raise council tax. Durham county council has put forward a series of cost-cutting measures that also include less weed killing and vacancies for "lollipop" men and ladies not being filled.
Looking forward to the βReformβs war on motoristsβ headlines.
A newly upgraded level crossing with lights and barriers on a rural road. There are 'KEEP CROSSING CLEAR' signs underneath the lights, potentially only 20x10cm big.
I'm not sure Network Rail understand suitable x-heights on signs...
This is seen increasingly more and more these days.

I put four once in a big portion of jollof rice. Turns out, not a good idea. The Nigerian in my flat at the time said it was mild.
Wow, that's quite the thing
So sorry for your loss
I didn't realise speed limit repeaters were made from lead these days
Reading could certainly do with some more greenery along its streets I've noticed in the short time I've been here
Ah the very unique and very slow gates at Redcar. Only crossing in the UK like it, perhaps the only in Europe.
New! After eight years of waiting, they're online! See London's unbuilt motorways as even their planners never could in our amazing, immersive Ringways Map, hosted by the amazing SABRE Maps. It *might* be the best thing we've ever done. #ringways
Good to hear everyone is safe looking at that damage - notably the train driver! It will be interesting to know what similarities if any this incident has to the Carmont derailment back in 2020. Hopefully lessons have been learned.

It's nice when you know what you want to do in life at this age
A triangular warning sign on a lamp post, warning of an unprotected quayside or riverbank. The car is of a design that makes the sign many decades old.
There's a few of these lining the Thames in Reading. Vintage.
@showmeasign.online
A sign on a lamp post. The top is a red circle with a white 'C', the bottom is a black and white plate stating "7am-7pm, Charge for (picture of a car) only, Pay on line by midnight tomorrow" (note the space between "on" and "line")
The congestion charges started in Oxford today. If only they had someone check the spelling on the signs!
A field with four rows of fences close together and various gates, gaps and barriers in esch one. Grass is mown around the fences
A lone small gate in a field with far reaching views across Oxfordshire in the background. The wooden hate has a large metal and plastic pad in the middle to press to open the gate.
A view the same as image 1 but from the other direction, showing different gates.
A green sign with the text "Centre for Outdoor Accessibility Training" with the Natural England logo in the top right corner
Was quite nice to stumble across this last week in the Chilterns. The Centre for Outdoor Accessibility has a lot of gates for testing!
A newly constructed pavement in amongst roadworks. A number of large sloped kerbstones form a ramp along the kerbline for around 3m. Behind thr pavement is a cycleway still under construction.
One added benefit of seeing @jayforeman.bsky.social and @markcooperjones.bsky.social launch their excellent book in Bristol on Thursday was I got a taste of some Dutch kerbs!
Was great to meet you both! Enjoying reading while I awaited my delayed train.
Right now there are a lot of Union Jacks hanging from streetlights and St George's Crosses on mini-roundabouts. Kent is bucking the trend by permanently adding EU flags to its road signs. Just what is going on in Dover? www.roads.org.uk/blog/red-whi...
