Iโm so pleased you think that. Lots of young Swedes seem not to know how important the womenโs actions were ๐
Look forward to reading it! All the best with your writing ๐
Given Trump's illegal war that is devastating the Middle East and pushing up energy bills, Keir Starmer should advise the King to call off Aprilโs state visit to the US.
A state visit should not be given to someone who repeatedly insults and damages our country.
Great piece Brian. I knew some of the story from the excellent Time and Tide Museum in Yarmouth, but youโve added so much. Thank you.
Cartoon from Swedish newspaper Social Demokraten showing the people involved in first court hearing of women arrested on 5 May 1917. Clary รhlstrรถm is 3rd from left on bottom row, wearing a headscarf.
Cover of book in Swedish by Hรฅkan Blomqvist called โPotatisrevolutionenโ (The Potato Revolutionโ). Cover photo shows a peaceful queue of largely women and children outside a grocery shop.
How about Clary รhlstrรถm, one of the women convicted, imprisoned and fined for โriotingโ in Stockholm on 5 May 1917?
Hundreds of women protested peacefully to try to get potatoes for their starving children. They were treated brutally by mounted police with sabres.

The Empress Plotina was the wife of Trajan and Hadrianโs adoptive mother. She grew very fond of Hadrian and played an instrumental role in the development of Hadrian's career. When Plotina died, she was deified, and Hadrian had a basilica built in her honour at Nemausus.

Wishing everyone a happy International Women's Day. To celebrate I'm giving away a pair of my books which recover pioneer women's voices and engineering, exploration, journalism, politics, and conservation to a school, or library, or teacher. I'll pick a winner from replies. Please repost!
#britishmuseum #archive holds very many references to women: the earliest recorded female visitors in 1762, Angelica Kaufmann paid to paint on Derby china in the 1790s, an 1857 photo, Beatrix Potter & women employed after the law for Civil Servants changed in 1921. #internationalwomensday #women

Photo from the early 1970s of a man on horseback negotiating the Birmingham inner ring road at Holloway Head
Iโm searching for the original and/or rights owner of this fabulous picture of Birmingham in the early 1970s. It popped up on my Instagram feed, but Iโve been unable to track it down.
Any leads? Iโm really hoping to use it in a book.
(And would much appreciate a RT please)
Hello Bluesky! I am looking for anyone who cares about/writes about/thinks about Rebecca West.
I've been on a 10 year mission to get her a blue plaque in London and am finally allowed to re-apply after it was last turned down.
I'd welcome help building a strong application.
Thank you ๐๐
Street scene in historic quarter of Bitola with a small river channel, full of bright green plants, running alongside colourful houses on the bank.
One of the few people to write about what are still little visited places in North Macedonia like lovely Bitola. There definitely should be a Blue Plaque.
A โJeffrey Epstein Walk of Shameโ has appeared in Washington DCโs Farragut Square. Stickers resembling the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame are printed with the convicted sex offenderโs likeness below the names and titles of figures mentioned in the Epstein files.
Let's save the Mediterranean Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. The Swedish government has raised the rent by over 50%, which is outrageous! Sign the petition, please. Not culture-friendly...#AncientBluesky โฑ๏ธ๐ฆ

All friends of public broadcasting: Before March 10th, hurry to answer the DCMS questionaire on the future of the BBC, as it comes up for Charter renewal. Find it here:
The British Museum's Reading Room bsky.app/profile/fran... was a Very Significant place of work, inspiration and connection for many women in our @beyondnotables.bsky.social database, and the extant Readers' records at the Museum were a goldmine.
Once upon a time the museumโs association yearbook used to list museums with their annual visitor figures. Is there anywhere I could see similar info in one place today?

โDemolition Derbyโ strikes again, as the 1938 Egyptian Art Deco style Crompton House has been flattened to make way for Derby's new flood defences, despite a public backlash.
With a bit more imagination, could the locally listed building not have been retained and included in the scheme somehow?
Wonderful news!
Thatโs a lovely photo of Phil Harris who led the West European Branch of Printed Books when I joined in 1982. A true gentleman and scholar.
Hope your new colleagues share our enthusiasm ๐คGunnersbury is a great place.
