Wondering why the NPR logo looks a little different today? Thread below:
Elaine Godfrey on getting booted from a Crockett event: "I agreed to leave, and four guards, including at least one who was armed, escorted me out of the building, through the parking lot, and right to the edge of the nearby highway, where they waited as I ordered a car. A spokesperson for the Crockett campaign did not respond to my request for comment on these events or for elaboration on the tiers of haterdom. A spokesperson for her team told Semafor that I had not been removed from the event. Crockett told CBS News there is βno evidenceβ that a reporter had been removed from an event. She added that there is a βspecific journalistβ who has a βhistory of being less than truthful,β and that this person had been sued for defamation and lost. Perhaps she was thinking of someone else, because thatβs not something that has ever happened to me."

oh I loved this!!!
am thrilled to hear this because I just bought a copy while on vacation last week!
I spent seven weeks with IJ and still want to immediately reread it TBH
finished Infinite Jest a few days ago and am now craving another similarly insane/challenging/very fun-to-read book, would love recommendations if you've got them
(I also loved The Last Samurai and 2666 fwiw)
ICE officers often tell people tracking and watching them that they are breaking federal law in doing so, but legal experts say the vast majority of observers are exercising their constitutional rights. n.pr/4qPmLGr
Getting toward the end of Infinite Jest and am debating what DFW would hate more: TikTok or pickleball
The person photographed here who is in their bathrobe filming armed, masked federal agents in St. Paul is MPR News journalist @samstroozas.bsky.social @mprnews.org . She is an incredible journalist and person. We do not deserve her.
my group chats are in shambles right now

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.
Hundreds of kids are still detained.
Weβll let the childrenβs words speak for themselves. π§΅
I've been reading Marty since I moved to D.C. which represents ... an incredibly small fraction of his time at the Post www.nytimes.com/2026/02/05/b...
something awesome is buying a sick new jacket at an estate sale. something even better is giving it to your wife as an early Valentine's Day present. and something even better than that? it's a teal and purple Columbia windbreaker with a '94 Lillehammer Olympics patch on it
The show Heated Rivalry only exists because of an article by Rachel Kurzius inspired Jacob Tierney to reach out to Rachel Reid. Today @washingtonpost.com laid Rachel off.

A manager for the Immigrant Defense Network told MPR News that back in November, 2,500 people were trained as constitutional observers. Now, the total is nearly 30,000 trained observers in 77 of Minnesota's 87 counties.
The Washington Post has laid off hundreds of talented journalists, so many of whom I was lucky to work with over the years.
The Post Guild launched this fund to support them:

In Minneapolis, for every story detailing the fallout of the federal crackdown, there are as many stories of people like Bri, a mom donating breastmilk for babies whose mothers are detained by ICE.
Bri's story:

Note from the editors: ProPublica is publishing the names of the two federal immigration agents involved in the fatal shooting of Minnesota protester Alex Pretti. We believe there are few investigations that deserve more sunlight and public scrutiny than this one, in which two masked agents fired 10 shots at Pretti as he lay on the ground after being pepper-sprayed. The Department of Justice said it is investigating the incident, but the names of the two agents have been withheld from Congress and from state and local law enforcement. The policy of shielding officersβ identities, particularly after a public shooting, is a stark departure from standard law enforcement protocols, according to lawmakers, state attorneys general and former federal officials. Such secrecy, in our view, deprives the public of the most fundamental tool for accountability.
A note from our editors:
In an interview with MPR News, Liam's mother gave an update on her son and her own safety. She said Liam asks again and again, βMommy, why donβt you pick us up?β Or βMommy, we donβt want to be here anymore. This place is ugly.β

also I remain furious at how inaccessible the sidewalks and crosswalks are because of how the roads got plowed and businesses/homeowners didn't shovel their sidewalks. my neighbors with mobility devices are resorting to the roads because the sidewalks are so bad! people are falling! (including me!)
If you are driving or digging out a parking spot in similar conditions I cannot stress enough how helpful a crowbar/prybar is for breaking up the icy snow! The shovel in my car simply was not strong enough for the ice, and I would've had to call a tow truck if I couldn't break up the ice myself
D.C. has been kind of a nightmare snow and ice-wise, and my Subaru Crosstrek finally met its match in an unplowed alley. But a very sweet teenager helped me break up the compacted snow/ice around my wheels with a crowbar and get me back on the road. I have never been more grateful for my neighbors!
