A not great photo taken from an airplane window showing a braided river transitioning to a narrow channel as it flows into the sea. The coastline is visible at the bottom of the photo. The sky is overcast and grey; patches of rain can be seen falling from the clouds.

I like the transition on this one...

The a cherry tree in full blossom as viewed from below the tree canopy. Branches extend out in long arches, reaching the ground. The tree creates almost an enclosed hemisphere, with the canopy formed by light pink cherry blossoms. There are several people present, snapping photos of the space.

I had 20 formative years in Arizona & now 20+ yrs in NZ. Loads of sunburns growing up. The NZ is notably spicier- can feel the burn when temps aren't nearly as hot. Learned from a weather nerd that this is mainly due to the sun being ~1 million miles closer to the earth in S hemisphere summer.

that drives people away from building in risky locations was what sat with me most. The context was around legislation/planning rules preventing development in risky locations, and how difficult/slow a process it is. If we don't do it, insurers will.

Sounds like an awesome class you put on!

I took a class that addressed risk and natural hazard (including climate change). We had a guest lecture from the gov't Natural Hazards Commission. It was fascinating. For me (50+ mature student) it was a connection I had never made. The comment that it will ultimately be the insurance industry

A screenshot from the FlightRadar app showing a map with Santa's current location (Mauritania) and flight path. The flight details are:
Flight: R3DNO53 (reads as Red Nose)
Aircraft: Sleigh
Registration: HO HO HO
Altitude: 60,000 feet

The icon in the map is three reindeer pulling a sleigh. If you zoom in on the icon, you can see the reindeer legs running and Santa's hat flicking about in the wind.
It is delightful!

Merry Christmas!

AFacebook post from the Wellington Museum:

Is it time to free the knee?

Some think it is time to bring walk shorts back into workplaces.

Walk shorts were a garment that was popular in New Zealand in the 1960s and 1970s. Walk shorts typically end above the knee and were traditionally worn with knee-high socks and leather shoes or sandals. This infamous fashion combo had to be petitioned to allow public service workers to wear them.

We are on the hunt for Wellingtonians who might have the full walk shorts public service uniform hiding in a back cupboard, photos of the clothes being worn, and an anecdote or two to share, they can contact us at collections@experiencewellington.org.nz

Senior Curator, Ian Wards spoke with Kim Hill on RNZ’s Morning Report about Walk Shorts, and why Wellington Museum wants to collect a walk shorts public service uniform.

Huh. I filled it in truthfully, but how can they even tell if you are an actual US tax payer from this? I am filling it in from NZ--often these sorts of surveys are geo blocked.

I live in New Zealand. Have been waiting for mail from my US bank (TX). Finally arrived after 5 wks. It has a "Postage Paid Sweden" sticker on top of the "US postage paid" printing on the envelope. It says it should be returned to Malmo, Sweden if undelivered πŸ™ƒ. That's the other side of the earth.

N applied to something like 25 schools (both MD and DO), which is not at all unusual. He got into all of the DO schools, and one MD school.

It's a crazy competitive system.

Pefacing this by just having learned this from my nephew...

The school. MD schools are harder to get into--test scores and crazy numbers of applicants (>10k for maybe 100-200 spaces). More DO schools are opening up, many (most?) are private and cost $$$; they are easier to get into.

My nephew is just starting medical school in the US (insert proud Auntie vibes 😊). He applied to both MD and DO schools. They get the same education and training.

Osteopath in NZ/AUS is not the same as Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) in the US.
