Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel silhouetted against the plastic seat back of a train.
#bookreview no. 5. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. A page turner. The plot was largely engaging and the threads of it were well tied together but I found the ending somehow muted. She built a beautiful and perilous world in this novel, and the horror of it is rivalled only by the beauty.
"You're on your own, babe" from the US government for citizens stuck in Qatar (and other places in the region):
"Americans who wish to depart should take advantage of commercial transportation options.
"Have a plan to depart in an emergency that does not depend on U.S. government help."
"I’m pretty sure technological progress is a law of nature, like gravity or death. The power loom, as we know, is inevitable, preordained by God, who works His miracles through the hands of rich and wise inventors. It’s foolish to resist it."
Folks, I’m very proud of this (long) new story. If you can find a spare half hour today, I’d love for you to tuck into Basking in Glory. @courtlandavenue.bsky.social was such an incredible editor to work with! FFO: glory holes, bugs fighting, Midwest sex shops

"The new waterwheel they built to power the loom made the river undrinkable, and when the boss cut my hours in half, I couldn’t buy food anymore, which really made the whole rickets situation get out of hand. But that’s exactly the sort of time you need a laugh, right?"

The utterance of "A.I.'s inevitability" is one of the most stark pure performatives I've seen in my time working in higher ed. Every time it is uttered, it is clearly not reporting a fact about the world but instead actively trying to create the reality it narrates. We can and must refuse.
Hard not to see my new walking pad as a human hamster wheel but DAMN I can see why hamsters go for that shit
