You don't need any knowledge of the mainline games or previous entries in this series for this to be enjoyable. Each of the LoT games are separate from each other (as far as I can tell from Tri's demo), and I hadn't played any mainline games before playing the first LoT.

The devs of DK64 made a mistake when creating the save file. The save data for the names associated with your DK Arcade highscore share 1 bit with your jetpac highscore.
As such, depending on the name you enter, your highscore will either look like a normal player or Steve Wiebe's cousin
