Setting aside the fact that the NY Times is in the PR business and not the journalism business (which is not new news), the White House must have a weak hand if they're trying to put out fake stories.
Interesting choice of language in the question to refer to "crimes allegedly committed by Jeffrey Epstein" as he pled guilty and was sentenced to 18 months for two felony prostitution charges. The crimes weren't just alleged but admitted and proven.
Obviously there was much more alleged as well.

I saw Dennis Ross once at UCLA in a debate about invading Iraq during the lead up.
He was arguing pro- and I couldn't believe that someone could be on a stage claiming to be an authority on a topic, and yet know less about the topic than nearly every student in the room. And it was a big room.
Imagine the kind of culture he must come from if he thinks saying this in public is ok?
