Very proud to host Peter Beinart at Stony Brook later this month. This has been a dream of mine for a while, and I'm thrilled about it.

Mar 30 5:30pm at our Humanities Institute, w/Bruce Robbins. "Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning."

I'm in Santiago and I made it to South America's Guggenheim. (It was on the life list.) Really, it's a spiral mall, or caracol, an architectural type typical of Chile that came about in the '70s. In this one, you can get your cell phone fixed, get your nails done and buy dildos.

Some very interesting work here on the biodiversity impact of land abandonment during the Black Death. I'd love to see something similar on the Highland Clearances ... it would usefully inform re-wilding chat.

Trying to stay in academia has been so demoralizing even without [waves hands]. And yet every time I log onto this website I'm met by a diverse community of scholars working in a broad range of fields, all of whom believe in and fiercely advocate for a better academy. What could be more hopeful?

best part was my saying to the undergrads "I don't think any of you are going to know this movie" and one of them
a) did
b) loves John Woo
c) I'm pretty sure she grew up on Woo
d) knew the title in its direct translation from Chinese and we argued for a bit about which movie we were talking about

Taught Marie de France's LaΓΌstic today -- murdered nightingale put in reliquary -- and talked about this scene, 3:55 in (BVM blown up, then prelude to Messiah comes in) to talk about just using religious imagery for extra emotional umph.

Alt text is important for accessibility but what we don’t talk about as much is that it’s also a great opportunity for joke density

But I did get to indulge in some CLOSE READING IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY fun when JW visited the grad center a couple fridays ago, so what with that and Brian being in the volume, I felt like Proust in a sense was coming to me

I have FULLY DROPPED THE BALL. S & G sits on my shelf about 40 pages read while this semester is kicking my bottom ouch. If we aimed to recoalesce -- I talked to Brian about this but I suspect we are both equally slammed -- I could definitely restart (and I should read it this summer anyway!)

Ebert famously hated this movie when it was released. My piece isn't really about criticizing Ebert, but I do address his position and use it as a way to challenge how we write about acting and collaboration in movies made by male geniuses.

have this group chat called "lunch" with some female friends which we created in 2024 to organise a lunch then instead we started chatting every single day and often organised drinks and dinner but this month it's happening.....this month we're having lunch, it's down as "lunch lunch" in my diary

The comparisons between Israel and apartheid S. Africa usually focus on the segregationist regimes that they respectively imposed onto their disenfranchised subjects but another pertinent one is that client states can, in some ways, actually become secessionist in a sense from their imperial sphere.

The presumption that your enemy (in this case, Trumpworld) is secretly clever is often misleading, a symptom of your own ability to narrativize and possess object permanence, both of which your enemy often lacks.
