This article was amended on 5 March 2026. An earlier version said low-skilled workers would β€œreceive immediate access to welfare and social housing” if Labour did not make them wait longer to apply for settlement. In fact, settlement status only gives people the eligibility to apply for welfare and social housing, it does not give them instant or automatic access to such benefits. This has been clarified.

Guardian has now [after my complaint] corrected Mahmood's deliberate & incendiary false claim settlement gives immigrants "immediate access to welfare and social housing".

Good for Gdn but embarrassing/shameful that Home Secretary deliberately misled the public for political gain like this.

There is also a consultation (but not a full, public one) on the removal of families, which includes the use of the powers in the Immigration Act 2016 to remove asylum support from families with children if they've been refused asylum.

But you can't have bespoke routes for children because children are fundamentally affected by household income. Children in poor households are far more likely to end up poor as adults & less likely to earn a higher income so cycle repeats because of the poverty imposed during childhood.

They didn't answer the ISL question I don't think but if under this, jobs can be paid at 80% of market rate so already on lower salaries. And over half of supported population are either children or adult family members so not sure how they've done the maths.

05.03.2026 12:20 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Yes precisely. And if you have children, you have no access to most childcare or in-work benefits/housing support; as current rules stand only main applicant can apply for permission to work, which means only one-bread-winner households which is unsustainable.

When they say measures will be laid in parliament and come into force in June, do they just mean they'll make a statement but it'll come in via immigration rules? Assuming they don't need primary legislation for this.

Or maybe it is just those in hotels for over a year but that would include dependents who won't be able to apply for permission to work so it's confusing. And obviously children.

"would otherwise receive immediate access to welfare and social housing" is BS.

Correct: "after 5 years working in a care home, would be eligible to apply for welfare and social housing on the same basis as the rest of us."

Deliberately misleading/disingenous.

They did have some figures a couple of years ago on numbers of ppl granted permission to work which were around that much.

Yeah it'll be a big problem if it goes ahead. Though the 2016 provisions were tried twice already since and buried as likely it would be a huge direct cost shunt to local authorities or massively increasing child detention. Not sure much more will have changed, except councils are even more broke.

Will apply to 21k people in hotels/on AS.

Asylum seekers waiting over a year for claim in UK may be allowed to work under new measures Shabana Mahmood hopes to reduce number of claimants in hotels by enabling them to support themselves

Just saw this "The measures, which will be laid in parliament and come into force in June, would remove support payments and accommodation to asylum seekers who illegally work, have the ability to support themselves, have the right to work or have broken the law." www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

05.03.2026 11:34 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I wonder if it'll mean more individuals and families will be refused support? Though for families they will then presumably seek accommodation from local authorities under s17CA/devolved provisions. Do we know any more on the work requirements?

I am immensely disappointed that the Government has today scrapped permanent refugee status. Refugees will now face reviews every 30 months and be forced to return if their country is deemed 'safe'.

We know that countries listed as 'safe' aren't safe for everybody, particularly LGBTQ+ refugees.

Refugee status to be temporary as Shabana Mahmood rips up rules on UK asylum Home secretary announces 30-month protection limit, with refugees required to leave if their home countries are later judged safe

Those fleeing disaster and conflict deserve certainty and dignity, not repeated questioning of their right to feel safe.

Progressive, humane policies strengthen communities.

Division does not. We can choose compassion, and we should.

Despite being continually accused of not integrating, Muslims have voted in numbers, and against a party with a Muslim Home Sec whose immigration policies and actions regarding Gaza they strongly opposed.Instead they found common value with a white British woman who spoke to them locally and beyond.
