It seems the federal layoffs have started. If any laid-off workers are thinking about entrepreneurship, Iβm happy to comp you a subscription to my newsletter, Really Good Business Ideas. Reach out if thatβs you, and please feel free to share this offer with anyone who could use it.
You need to pick a traffic source and master it. Not all traffic sources are created equal, but itβs vital that you pick something and master it.
PS. If we havenβt met before, I write about how to actually grow a business (no fluff)

2. Referral π£
This is when someone clicks on a link to your website from another. It could be Google search results, a random blog, an ad you pay for, a news article, or even Bluesky! This is where you can have an influence.
π
If you have an online business, you must learn how to drive traffic.
There are two broad ways you can get traffic.
1. Direct π―
This is when people type your URL into their browser. You have minimal control over this, but a strong brand is your biggest lever.

If you know me, you know I LOVE Google Trends. Today I share:
π What exactly Google Trends data is
π€ How to make sure you don't misinterpret the data
π‘ 8 ways that I use Google Trends (and you should too)
I'm kind of the opposite. I take it easy in the summer and then go hard all fall for a final push.
I don't know who needs to hear this but done is better than perfect π
Here's my number one productivity tip π
When you have too many things to do on your to-do list, delete some! ποΈ
I'm serious. Many things on your list are less important than you're making them out to be. And theyβre taking up space you need to focus on the truly important things.
For anybody interested, here are the @bsky.app banner dimensions and safe zones π
Since they don't specify it anywhere I had to figure it out myself to include them in @easybranding.io π€
Responsiveness is very weird so keep it minimal and centered π

Ohhh I read the book! I didn't know there was a show/movie!
Cowboy Carter was my number one! I think I listened to it on repeat for a week straight when it came out π€£
Ditto!

One of the best things I figured out when I was younger is that my home situation and relationships were very secure so I could take more risks in business.
Traffic: keyword research
CRO: move the call to action above the fold
π
I guess it's depends on the situation! But to go from 1 to 2 conversions because you only have 1000 sessions won't get you very far and you'll just be guessing at what to do. If you can ramp up your traffic, customers should grow but if they don't you have data work with.
I think business size makes a difference. It's a lot easier to do CRO with a huge website. When it's small, it's easier and more important to keep getting your top of funnel.
What do you think is easier? Doubling your traffic or doubling your conversion rate?
Excited to read this β
The community and all of the built in networks effects that help with growth. A lot of my subscribers have from from Recommendations!
Yay congrats! I've been so happy to be on Substack!
That sounds great π
30 days left in 2024! How are you making them count?
There's a lot of pressure to have a strong brand story. They usually start with a kernel of truth but over time they often get perfected into a nice tidy little origin story that's based on an insight that, in many cases, came after the company started. Not always, of course!
I also think a lot of that "ah ha" stories are revisionist history.
Is it too early to do it now?
It's been almost a year and I still love it!

Best feeling. Never gets old.
It's interesting because so many ineffective marketers don't understand that it's about inputs and outputs. I think once coders understand the longer feedback cycles they can be great marketers.
