Ahead of the UK launch of Everybody to Kenmure Street, a new documentary about a Glasgow street that rose up to drive out immigration officers trying to deport their neighbours, we spoke to Henry Bell, a writer and activist who helped to initiate the protest.

Last week, Jersey passed an historic law to allow terminally adults the right to an assisted death. State members voted by 32 to 16 in favour of the bill, which sets a precedent for the UK to follow.

The Bishops' Conference of Scotland has claimed people are "selectively quoting" the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to support an end to compulsory religious observance. Actually, the UN has directly and explicitly told the govt to introduce opt out rights.

It's #WomensHistoryMonth. We're working with @engenderscot.bsky.social on their Let's Change the Act campaign. Here's a 2024 blog post from Lynsey Mitchell of the Uni of Strathclyde on the history of abortion law and why we need to fully #DecriminaliseAbortion

Humanism is all about coming to celebrating the one life we have. Part of that is about accepting mortality.

Our Communications Manager Lara hosts Death Cafes every year. These are informal spaces where you can talk about your feelings around death.

Ever noticed how little Christian nationalism appears to have to do with Christianity?

We love this side-splitting video from Friend Dog Studios about "GOP Jesus". Full vid at the link below.

Are we due one of these about any high-profile figures in the UK? Hmmm.

We weren't alone in warning the Scottish govt that their new religious observance bill discriminated against non-religious and minority religious children, as Maggie Chapman MPS explained during the final debate on the bill.

Letting children opt into RO but not out is discrimination. It's simple.

Happy #WorldNGODay. With democratic institutions being eroded by the Trump White House and similar proposals being made for the UK by Nigel Farage's Reform Party, it will increasingly take people power to protect the rights, freedoms, and values of secular democracy.

Kate Forbes spoke at the final religious observance debate about a schoolchild who had gone against their parents' wishes to attend a Christian club.

We *support* this child's right to do that! But why has her govt just passed a law that prevents children opting out of RO?

Obvious discrimination!

Reform UK's Home Affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf has promised to restore Britain's "Christian heritage". How? A new "patriotic curriculum", mass ICE-stye immigration raids and deportations, and ending indefinite leave to remain. Restoring our heritage, or hateful white-nationalist bigotry?

This is an important step and I welcome the government’s support for my amendment. But it is only the first step in securing equitable rights for all children in Scotland to choose what religious activities they participated in.

We loudly and clearly oppose bigotry and hate against people based on their sexuality or gender identity. We are also of the firm believe that human-made climate catastrophes won't stop happening if we tell the weather it is a liberal-metropolitan plot.

Richard thinks we're pretending to be neutral while covertly poisoning Scottish education with our agenda. But actually, we are open and proud in our support for gay rights, trans rights, feminism, and the fight against climate change.

Richard Lucas, leader of the reactionary Scottish Family Party, has written to The Herald complaining that our organisation continues to attempt to secularise education, even though we already dominate the "moral landscape" of Scotland on "gay rights, trans rights, climate change and feminism".

School pupils in Scotland deserve objective, inclusive, facts-based education. This bill totally fumbles the opportunity to provide that. We hope MSPs will use their vote to show the government where it has gone wrong...

He also explained how the bill creates a hierarchy of belief systems with Christians at the top, because it lets children opt *into* religious observance against their parents' wishes, but not vice versa. Mind-boggling stuff.

In a great explainer for The Herald last year, academic Andrew Tickell explained exactly why this bill is so insidious. He outlined the ramifications of a recent supreme court case in Northern Ireland, which found that obligatory religious worship at school amounts to indoctrination.

Today is the day. MSPs will vote on the Scottish government's broken religious observance bill, which fails to give children the right to opt themselves out of compulsory religious observance.
