There indeed is a lot of papers on microbial defense/anti-defense systems coming out that were run under conditions that are so foreign that they leave you wondering if that's really how they work.
We do need to test these systems more! π§ͺπ¦ π¬

Very interesting review estimating that cyanobacteria were already prepared for aerobic metabolism before oxygenating the global atmosphere!

A thallus-forming N-fixing fungus-cyanobacterium symbiosis from subtropical forests
Fungus lives within cyanobacterial sheaths in a thallus-forming symbiosis, named βphyllosymbia.β
Wow, they found fungal hyphae inside the sheaths of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria! Usually with these types of symbiosis it's the other way around, with bacteria growing inside their host. This is supercool!π§ͺ

Fun fact: they're green because they steal the chloroplasts of the algae they eat. The chloroplasts become their symbionts and do photosynthesis for them in exchange for some essential nutrients. That process is called "kleptoplasty".

Peatland #conservation and #restoration are essential for the health and stability of our planet. Protecting vital ecosystems like this must become a higher priority.

They fight #ClimateChange by sequestering #carbon, regulate water flow and provide habitats for unique species. But peatlands are under threat from drainage, land-use changes and rising temperatures.

#Peatlands are among the most important ecosystems on Earth. They cover only ~3% of the planet, but they store more carbon than all the worldβs forests combined.

#Cyanobacteria are blue-green #bacteria, but this video was captured using a fluorescence #microscope. That makes their chlorophyll shine with this red glow, making it easier to find them inside the #moss #leaves.

So what we have here is nitrogen-fixing #cyanobacteria in symbiosis with a #peat #moss. These bacteria live inside liquid-filled dead cells (called hyalocytes) in the leaves of the moss. They can move around inside the cells by following the water flow.

A fan of #Bryophytes? You are (almost) not alone! #Bryophytes rule...they can grow almost anywhere, host a fascinating world of #microbes (incl. #nitrogen-fixing #Cyanobacteria), are key in #biogeochemistry, and hold huge potential for #biotechnology. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
