Maybe it's because I don't have to do a lot of these, but writing a letter of recommendation for a student I believe in is warming my heart and giving me life this morning.
a major american city is being forced to close schools because armed government agents are raiding and pepper spraying and terrorizing children and teachers for social media content
The most unsubtle, heavy-handed claims made by pomo academic types have turned out to all be true. Gender is a relation of domination that requires constant, affirming witness. Capitalism will require extractive colonial relations. Thereβs no subtlety. Every day is like a 101 seminar at Oberlin.
The team behind Climate.us aims to provide the same kind of reliable, fresh content that used to be available via Climate.gov. We hope youβll support us. #ClimateForUs

There is a layer of scum a connective tissue... that connects all the people that populate the Epstein ecosystem
Men of a certain age having little to no sense of self beyond work ... no charisma ... deeply soulless ... empty ... wanting... vacuous
For capitalism to keep operating it has to convince you that you are thing that ends at the boundaries of your body rather than a flow connected to uncountable others. After all, you can't really profit off extracting from yourself.
for everyone visiting their parents who are getting weird ideas from the machine they never turn off, and it's getting harder to ignore them, and fixing the machine will not solve the problem:
"curb" or "kerb" are both fine
if they will notice it on the curb, they may not check the recycling bin
I know people think Iβm too woo-woo about theory and capitalism and markets. But I sincerely believe this kind of degradation of micro-trust is the real social and economic rot. We constantly feel scammed and then we start reacting like marks instead of mutually reliant humans.

peak grocery store experience - duck in from a sudden rainshower, wander the nearly-empty aisles with Tears for Fears "Head Over Heels" playing from the overhead speakers, followed by "Love My Way" by Psychedelic Furs. This nugget will be in my brain forever.
Discovering computer as an adult makes you go crazy. Discovering computer as a baby makes you go crazy. In all of human history, there will only ever be one generation to discover computer at the correct age: 13
I've watched every minute of the recorded oral comments & read the hundreds of written submissions to

A Borges story about a guy who gets AI to summarize all the worldβs information for him, and then summarize the summary, until the AI has the whole world summarized into a single word. He sits alone at his desk, staring at the word, repeating it endlessly, certain he is experiencing everything
The propaganda of my youth made me believe villains were invested in being skilled at something. These days, the evil-doers canβt DO anything but publicly suck. They canβt make anything. They donβt build anything. Itβs not even innovative evil. Just the same old mess with a new loser at the helm.
Travel Forecast for Thursday as generated by the Weather Star 4000+ emulator. At the bottom my humidity of 7% and dew point of 21Β°F. Everything is washed out like an analog NTSC television image, which I did by overlaying shaderglass with an NTSC shader.
Did you know someone reverse-engineered the Weather Channel computer system from the 80s/90s and now you can generate your own private weather channel for your location?

Beacon. To my husband's credit he very gently suggested that is not really a first name.
Biodiversity Heritage Library is an absolute marvel. I am just bowled over every time I get to use it. That's all.
The library is the only place that Americans experience the fullness of what it means to remove goods from the market. It pings our consciousness. Hey we could love differently!
The incoming NIH Director has repeatedly stressed the importance of open science and open data.
Now petabytes of NIH-hosted research data are about to be lost on his watch.

In my post about PubMed, I raised concern about what might happen with the committee that decides what journals are PubMed-indexed. They could open the anti-science/pseudoscience floodgates.
This is the message now where the committee should be. Gulp

Attacking openAI's (and other LLM grifters) infrastructure is at this point "community self-defense" for the whole internet. They're literally a DOS attack funded by some of the richest and most evil men on the planet.

Recently fired employees of URI's CRC plunge into Narragansett Bay
Today URI terminated 13 employees from the CRC working in international development. A local impact from the devastating cuts to USAID. Several CRC members partook in a cold plunge for solidarity.
This policy is called βsex as a biological variable.β
Of course, itβs a foolβs errands to try to tease apart the various threads of malice and dipshittery, but I think thereβs a real chance the current administration thinks this means βsex is biologically variable [over the lifetime].β
