Yo tengo una tristeza enorme para mis compadres cubanos. La batalla contra el imperialismo nunca termina.
Screen grab from The Guardian about Australiaโs use of temporary exclusion orders
Temporary exclusion orders - didnโt know this was a thing in Australia (that an Australian citizen can be bared from re-entering the country if theyโre a safety/terror threat).
I canโt find a data on how often this has happened/happens. Anyone know if one can find said data anywhere?
El gallo negro era grande, pero el gallo rojo era valiente
Para todos que esten luchando contra el autoritarismo
That said, I do question the limits of the argument. When does the violence become unbearable and must be met in kind? Can there be physical resistance without violence? And the notion of (group) self defence -what of it?
Still, I will be giving my students this to read in week one of Moral Theory
Although I agree with her, I struggle to internalise this message, to fight hate without becoming hateful, fight violence without becoming violent. I find myself weak in the face of hate.
Finally got around to reading this piece by @roxanegay.bsky.social
Itโs marvellous for its clarity, simplicity, and power.
"When we stand for what is right, we have to always stand for what is right, without exception."
(Da Mayor would endorse wholeheartedly)
Thank you!!!

Bit of background: this is a cover by Julieta Rada of her dadโs, Ruben Rada, a legend of Uruguayan candombe and an advocate for the AfroUruguayan community. Hereโs Seรฑor Radaโs rendition with the equally indomitable Eduardo Mateo

of rebellion, hope, struggle, faith. Some classic tunes, others more recent. Not sure who reads my posts, but in case itโs of any help - and I do feel I turn to art in these dark moments for respite - Iโll post a song periodically with some lyrics that stand out for me.
authoritarian governments propped up by the US and US corporations. (Hereโs a good time to note that despite being agnostic, I do want to believe in an afterlife, if only for Kissinger to be held to divine justice).
I find myself listening to a lot of music from Latin America. Songs of protest,
Iโve really been struggling since the US invaded Venezuela to make sense of whatโs happening (emotionally, I get it from a โrealistโ, post rules-based viewpoint). As a Latino, it's impossible not to think about the history of 1970s, and the personal stories I heard growing up, of right-wing (cont)
Talk about corrupting the youth! Am I right?!?!

Day 15 - I was going to post this yesterday at the start of Chanukah, and then wasnโt sure I should post it tonight. But I think itโs perfect. Laughter heals. Fuck the terrorists. And whatโs the history of comedy with Jews? Not much! Hereโs Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert
