Targeting only people who are likeliest to buy your product is like handing out coupons by the register.
It's efficient in that you're not "wasting" money, but it's not effectively growing the business. Marketing isn't just buying transactions, it's building relationships.

This is the difference between internal and external. Incentives change what is “good” over time. Taste calibrated with the outside world is an important part of what a good agency partner brings to the table.
This taste is shaped largely by incentives. When you are agency-side, you know your worth is dependent on the quality of your work over time. You need to make stuff that people like so you are closely attuned to what people like.
You can hire every single creative, producer, and account person from an agency you admire but not get the same level of work. The culture of an agency is what you are buying: their collective taste, the ability to know what is good and what is not.
