Remembering Private 24976 William Ernest Jones of the 17th Pals.
We were contacted by Piers Nimmo whose Grandfather married Ernest's sister Lily. His letter advising Lily of her brother's death is very poignant. Photo & letter from Piers π. Full account- tinyurl.com/kwu743hp

A private photo taken by a veteran in 1919-20 from a collection he took on the battlefields - this one at the Menin Gate looking into the shattered city of Ypres.
The archaeological features we uncovered in Messines in 2012 were exceptional. However, what has stayed with me the most was the discovery of the mortal remains of a missing soldier. It turned out to be a defining moment in the course of my professional journey, a focus I still maintain to this day.

The Menin Gate. Through a simple gap in the ancient fortifications of Ypres passed many thousands of men who would not return. They would not be found: βmissing, believed killedβ. Glance up at its panels as you pass through, for βThey are not missing, they are hereβ
