Finally finished my timelapse of the lunar eclipse under the aurora in Fairbanks, Alaska! Check out the massive substorm turning the ground green in front of the eclipse, too!
This is one of my favorite timelapses I have captured!

$1B per day is about $42 million per hour. About 30 min worth of that spending can fund my lab for my ENTIRE career (~20 3-year NSFs or ~10 5-year R01s). Please wrap your head around that.

I think the divide stems from the historically exclusive use of Arabidopsis as a study system. Kinda like how people who study Drosophila aren't considered entomologists.
does legalizing raw milk mean we get clotted cream in the US now?
I'm definitely on team "pizza is a savory pancake" but I like the idea of calzones as a cheesy dumpling ngl π₯
Some folks think that if we preprint papers, then double-blind review is pointless. Here @comecology.bsky.social argues that even if double-blind can't be an impermeable shield, it's still worthwhile as a compass: www.oikosjournal.org/blog/view-ed...
it's pancake day and I had pizza for dinner, so yes π
is pizza a pancake?
tech companies stop making Black Mirror episodes irl challenge
I'm not sure if it's luck or my choice in journals, but I've never had an editor fight back when I tell them a review is unrealistic. Granted, I've also never had an editor veto a review without me responding to it first π€·
this seems like the kind of thing that literally no one asked for
I've also seen that, but I don't really see a big issue with harsher reviews (so long as they are civil) since editors can always veto an unrealistic review

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. Itβs always a matter of will not resources.
There are some well-documented benefits in the form of reduced biases, but I agree that it isnt very feasible in current preprint/open-data ecosystem. I could see it working better if journals published all data/code alongside papers, rather than outsourcing to github/etc
my hot take is that double blind review should always be an option, but not mandatory since it is mutually exclusive with pre-printing

Fecal Flakes would make a great band name π
I guess in a way they are US numbers? I have to assume the spike is due to an uptick in American applicants π¬
I think epiphytes deserve a shout too
LOVE seeing the work on @nativebio.bsky.social and @joseph-yracheta.bsky.social highlighted in the NYT.
