Our new @plos.org Pathogens Pearl asks a simple but important question:
When Candida is detected in the respiratory tract, what does it actually mean?
TLDR Answer: caution, context, and much better diagnostics!

Very nice indeed!
Finally made it to @microbiologysociety.org Annual Meeting in Ireland ๐ฎ๐ช #MicrobioIrish25 for 2 days of brilliant research & community. Loved seeing the breadth of microbiology across health, agriculture & genomics, reconnecting with old colleagues, and soaking up the views over Hodson Bay.
...and how Candida albicansโ cell wall shapes antifungal immunity. Plus: copperโs role in biofilms & the impact of antifungal drugs on resistance ๐ก๏ธ
Thanks to @microbiologysociety.org for a great meeting. It's great to be part of a vibrant community pushing boundaries in medical mycology!

It was a privilege to give a talk yesterday in the polymicrobial interactions & pathogenesis session about my work on the role of copper in Candida - bacterial interactions #Candida2025 @mrccmm.bsky.social @microbiologysociety.org thanks to the wonderful @rosannesprute.bsky.social for the picture
Fantastic start to day 2 with Arnab Pardhan discussing work from the group looking at niche-simulating media and the impact on PAMP exposure #Candida2025 @mrccmm.bsky.social
Last @mrccmm.bsky.social talk of the day from talented PhD candidate @harry-osborne.bsky.social about how cell wall targeting antifungals impact immune recognition to C. albicans.
Also kudos for sharing all his data via GitHub QR code during his talk #openscience
Next, my colleague Hugh Gifford is sharing his work on developing a human body temp fish model for Candida infection work, which led to his discovery of the role xenosiderophores play in C. auris - host interactions #Candida2025 @mrccmm.bsky.social
Kicking us off at #Candida2025 plenary session is the superstar Cat Williams from @jusher.bsky.social lab with her C.glabrata synthetic gene array data @mrccmm.bsky.social
The #Candida2025 meeting has started! And what a great kick-off with these two keynote speakers: @slg1717.bsky.social introduced her group's work around IL-17 and our boss Bernie presented a great overview about our group's candidalysin research. ๐๐งฌ๐ฌ

I'll be at #Candida2025 next week.
I know the YMAP server has been having some difficulties lately. I expect it will be back in play before the conference.
In addition to the work I'll be presenting on a poster, I'll welcome conversations about YMAP!
Even the breadsticks on the salads at Candida and Candidiasis #Candida2025 are on brand as C. albicans hyphae @microbiologysociety.org @mrccmm.bsky.social

New in JB: S. aureus is known to incorporate exogenous fatty acids (FA) into its membrane. Menjivar, Bose et al. show that S. aureus has a FA degradation system expressed under catabolite control.
