i really wanted to enjoy it due to the aesthetics and lore (original trilogy i played before i could even read) and was surprised how hooked i got. thereβs so much to soak in. i just hope they get to keep building on it
yeah all the terminology use in this game gives me netrunner vibesβeverything is called something else. thereβs even more in the lore bits! loved the one about βshell deathβ
got confused by schemas at first as well:
- the armory is the shop
- when you leave the map (exfil) with a schema, the item (in this case echo chamber core) is added so you can buy it from the shop
- this is good because having access to items reliably lets you build stuff easier
the resulting article was a perfect intro to SDF fonts for me, as someone whoβs only dealt with bitmap and vector fonts before. iβm gonna revisit it in ny next project ^^

Iβve been tinkering with a autobattler for a year now where magicβs trigger system and FFXIIβs gambit system have been some of the main references. i bounced off the Unicorn Overlord demo, sounds like i need to give it a second shot!
I played a bit of this demo today - it's really cool but one thing I love is how it uses the language of deckbuilders/card games to complement its narrative beats. A few games tried to do this, often they tried to be more systems-heavy (like Griftlands) but this is more narratively elegant.

whatβs the significance of the blue numbers? my guess is hint that there is something to fill in on that line? for me the outline on the blue numbers make them slightly muddy compared to the numbers without outlines. my suggestion is to reduce the line width or increase the contrast somewhat

I increasingly spend time thinking about designing games for spectation as opposed to just active participation. On the extreme end, you have game shows, which are nearly 100% about spectation & interesting to me for that reason. But many types of games benefit from considering, What's fun to watch?
I think 1v1 fighting games (Street Fighter, Tekken etc) got this all figured out: they are flashy, easy to follow while fast, uncertain outcome til the very end. There is also lots of opportunity for players to show of their skills and personality.
To go all the way back to the grey squirrel notification: 98% of the value of "AI" (broad, inaccurate label) - including the tech that identifies a squirrel - is machine learning, NOT generative AI.
GenAI is what outputs "there's a squirrel on the sidewalk" instead of "motion detected: squirrel".
IMO any enduring value resulting from genAI won't involve a human-provided prompt. It's useful for giving computer output a human-palatable shape*, but anything worth doing should be done by a human and anything genAI CAN do probably isn't worth doing.
*IRL example: video upscaling/frame gen
