What I Thought Users Needed vs What They Actually Used | daily.dev
A developer reflects on building free tools with too many features, only to discover users consistently chose the simplest option and ignored advanced...
When I started building tools, I kept adding features.
Users ignored most of them.
They just wanted:
Open → Do the task → Leave.
That changed how I build products.

Curious — what’s the first thing you check when testing a website?
Speed, UX, or SEO?

Most “free tools” websites are slow.
I built one that scores:
99 Performance
100 Accessibility
100 Best Practices
100 SEO
Speed builds trust. ⚡

Why Authority Compounds Differently Than Traffic
Traffic moves fast.
Traffic can appear overnight.
Authority doesn’t.
It builds slowly — through consistency, repetition, and recognition.
I wrote about how authority compounds differently than traffic, and why that changes how you think about growth:

Just earned the Top Reader in UX — February 2026 badge on daily.dev 🏅
Reading great builders’ insights daily has changed how I design and build tools.
Learning never compounds overnight — but it compounds.

I’ve faced this a lot.
The promise is speed, but the setup alone kills momentum. The best tools I’ve used were the ones I could open and use immediately without reading docs first.

Login is killing your tool growth.
I removed signup from mine.
Results:
Users stayed longer.
Bounce rate dropped.
Trust increased.
No marketing trick. Just less friction.

I’m already seeing this.
Some of my tool pages get traffic without ranking high, just because they solve a very specific task.
Feels like usefulness matters more than position now.

One thing I kept asking while building tools:
why does a 10-second task require a full signup?
Sometimes you just want to:
• edit an image
• generate a QR code
• or quickly work with a PDF
No account. No friction.
That’s why AllInOneTools exists.
Open → Do → Close.

I started documenting the thinking behind AllInOneTools.
Why I removed signup.
Why simple tools became complicated.
Why “open → do → close” matters.
Building in public.

I’ve seen this too.
A lot of orgs treat AD like a black box — just follow the ritual and hope nothing breaks.
It works… until it doesn’t. Then nobody really understands the fundamentals anymore.

Most people don’t bookmark tools.
They use them once.
That changed how I build.
Instead of trying to “retain users,” I focus on removing friction for that one visit.
If the task is simple, the experience should be simpler.
Open → Do → Close.

Totally agree.
Speed changes perception. Once charging feels as quick and effortless as refuelling, the mental barrier disappears.
Same pattern everywhere: reduce friction → adoption follows.

Most website problems don’t show up as errors.
They show up as:
• Fewer enquiries ,
• Higher bounce rates
• Looks good, but no results
Usually the issue isn’t design.
It’s speed, clarity, or trust.
Small fixes compound.
Silent fixes matter most.
Build for users first.
Metrics follow.
