Sam Harris is no longer his friend, and Elon now views language as just another tool to achieve his goals. The volume of posts increased as well. He is not just sharing his thoughts. He is rallying his various audiences to action. Truth be damned, he will use his tools as he wants.
Over the following 10 years, Elon made dozens of "over optimistic" claims regarding FSD. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that most of these claims were not outright lies, but by the time he bought Twitter, his attitude to lying had shifted dramatically.
In 2011, he admired Sam, and publicly recommended his book "Lying" which endorses the idea that lying is almost never worthwhile, even to spare a friend's feelings, because it errodes trust.
Elon has had a loose relationship with the truth for a long time, but I think his attitude towards lying has changed remarkably along the same timeline as his friendship with Sam Harris.
Elon thinks NASA should have paid him for a whole new Crew Dragon Mission, interrupting the ISS schedule to bring 2 astronauts back instead of just leaving them there to work on the ISS a while longer, and bring them back on the next scheduled Dragon.
So, the effect of the Earth being near the edge of that region isn't calculated? They don't multiply by the probability that future observations could push the Earth outside of the region of uncertainty?
What if 2024YR4 is on a trajectory to miss the Earth, but Elon decides to nudge it towards Earth so he can mine the impact site for rare earths.
Their moral circle doesn't extend to anyone who might be affected by their laziness.
Any countries whose scientific research funding bodies are NOT currently under siege by their own national leadership would do very well announcing investments in bringing in foreign research talent right now
