πŸ‘€ Humans scan their environment in everyday life – but how much does context matter?

A study observed 45 people in three urban spots: library, study house and refectory. Scanning was highest in the refectory, lowest in the library.

Intelligence Evolved at Least Twice in Vertebrate Animals | Quanta Magazine Complex neural circuits likely arose independently in birds and mammals, suggesting that vertebrates evolved intelligence multiple times.

β€œA bird with a 10-gram brain is doing pretty much the same as a chimp with a 400-gram brain,” said Onur GΓΌntΓΌrkΓΌn, who studies brain structures at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany. β€œHow is it possible?”

🧠🌟🐭 Excited to share some of my postdoc work on the evolution of dexterity!

We compared deer mice evolved in forest vs prairie habitats. We found that forest mice have:
(1) more corticospinal neurons (CSNs)
(2) better hand dexterity
(3) more dexterous climbing, which is linked to CSN number🧡
