Well at least I suppose you could say you’re looking for more efficient ways of helping people. I can’t say that about my work.
I know, right? This kind of gets at a core tenet of capitalism that’s been there all along, but I personally never felt that tension so clearly. I suppose it’s a late realisation of something other groups have been experiencing for a very long time in one form or another
As LLM-based software becomes more capable, at least in the corporate setting I work in, I find it increasingly difficult to have convincing technical arguments against it. Ethical, environmental & philosophical ones still hold for me, but incentives are stacked against this. This genuinely sucks.
Oh we love Castle Rock!
It’s fun to revisit this conversation in light of the recent Alpha School reporting by @404media.co

So ultimately this is, as they warned us, about power and wealth concentration. Who knew?
The world needs more subtlety and quietude, I hope you can find it within you to continue your creative work.
One of the reasons I love following Mr Hightower is because he so visibly grapples with the use of GenAI in software engineering, and he appears to be so conflicted about it at times. The struggle is so real. I am not a software engineer, but it really resonates.

The Perth North/South divide was one of the many things, including the word fortnightly, that I had to learn about after landing here!

Yeah. I’d say in my experience with American English (also not my first language) 9 out of 10 times people say biweekly to mean every two weeks, but every once in a while you hear it used to denote twice per week, so that can throw you off
As someone who moved from the States to Australia, can confirm it was a new word I didn’t initially understand. I’ve come to like it because it’s less ambiguous than ‘biweekly’
Also tends to correlate with images that are presented in elaborate frames with the name of the photographer inscribed in some fancy cursive font
I initially thought this was a clever metaphor for the modern times, but then read the thread and realised it was quite literal
Happy new year! Stay warm 😉
It really baffles me how this technology’s inability to perform its supposed core function is somehow acceptable. A product of any other kind with this type of fatal flaw would fail dramatically in the market, yet this continues to get pushed on us with no meaningful resistance.
In which my personal favorite @dublab.bsky.social makes an appearance
Wissahickon park was one of my favorite places back when I lived in Philly. Hiking, riding my bike, taking pictures, sometimes all of the above in one visit.
Power stations can be very photogenic, this made me think of Michael Kenna’s power station studies: www.michaelkenna.com/gallery.php?...
If you’re marketing your product as an “everything machine”, blaming a negative outcome on misuse is an interesting defense strategy

One of the most fascinating things to me is how malleable the systems, rules and constructs that represent “current state” that we live in are (or aren’t), how different personality types perceive and act upon that malleability, and how that ultimately shapes the world
Mamdani is going to implement Sha-la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la-tee-da
Just like that

Wait, where was I?
And I am willing to bet that even after it bursts with catastrophic consequences, there will be a large contingent of people saying “but the problem wasn’t the tech itself, the tech is fine”
